U.S. Rep. Beto ORourke, D-El Paso, leads Republican incumbent Ted Cruz by 2 percentage points among likely voters, according to an Ipsos online poll released Wednesday in conjunction with Reuters and the University of Virginia. ORourke has been closing the gap over the last several months, but this is the first poll that puts him ahead of Cruz.
Forty-seven percent of likely voters told Reuters they would vote for O'Rourke, while 45 percent said they would cast their ballot for Cruz. Three percent said they would vote for "Other," and 5 percent said "None." The margin of error on that portion of the poll was 3.5 percentage points.
A Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday put Cruz 9 percentage points ahead of ORourke among likely voters. That poll was based on phone interviews, while the Ipsos poll used an online survey. But its trying to predict who will show up on Election Day that shifts the numbers, said Ipsos Vice President Chris Jackson.

(5,614 posts)I think that is proving to be Grassley. What is amazing is that the LEAST popular Senator in the United States is still in a tie with an obviously superior challenger. O'Rourke should be way ahead and I'd guess in most places he would be.
Texas is challenging Florida for stupid. It's going to be close...

(9,118 posts)That other poll was disheartening. Im glad to hear that this senate race has a chance at succeeding and that Lloyd Bentsens old seat may once again be held by a Democrat.

(26,748 posts)I would agree that people who were previously unlikely to vote are more likely to do so this year... but that's not how a likely voter screen works. They actually ask them things like "are you registered?" and "will you be voting this year?". To the extent the energy is on our side... I would expect that to show up in LV figures.
