Dr. Ford has an experienced team working for her who are not taking any Republican bullshit. No. Not one bit.
Gloria Borger just read some of the points coming up in the negotiations.
1. Dr. Ford will not agree to being questioned by a female attorney instead of Senators. She will only answer questions from Senators.
2. She will not have a time limit on her opening statement.
3. She will not be in the same room as Judge Kavanaugh.
4. The FBI should investigate her allegations.
5. Mark Judge must be issued a subpoena.
That was what she had from Manu Raju.
Chuck Grassley and Orrin Hatch and the other white pasty men on the Judiciary Committee have made the mistake of thinking that all they had to do was pay lip service to Dr. Ford. This is what happens when you don't take sexual assault and the anger of women seriously.
They aren't going to get away with playing games. This is not going to be Anita Hill 2.0.
Brett Kavanaugh is going to become known as a huge historical mistake. I don't think he is going to make it. If he is confirmed his term on the court will be tainted. This is now going to drag out for an entire week more until next Thursday. Every single day is going to be a day of pain for this nomination.
I believe Dr. Ford is telling the truth. I think Judge Kavanaugh is a liar and is a man with bad character. His conduct while working for Ken Starr and his reopening the Vince Foster case is all the proof I ever needed to know that Brett Kavanaugh is a terrible person.

This has gone too far for Grassley and the republicans to blow her off. They can't walk away now.

(13,921 posts)We want to believe that the other side is playing by the rules.
They aren't. The would be rapist could walk into their hearing Monday, grope every female in the room in full view of the cameras, and 50+pence would still vote him in.
They dont care about decency. They dont care about rules. And they have reached a point where even PR and elections have diminishing returns for them. They are at the use it or lose it point for all the power they have seized so far.

(13,921 posts)I mean, they can't. At this point, they are all in. If they lose hold and trump ends up being the first president to end up in jail.. the rest are tied in, and how much easier to lock up a former senator than a former president.
They hold, consolidate, increase power now.. or they lose everything. What would you do, sans- conscience?

(17,992 posts)Territory now. This is not Anita Hill time. This charge by Doctor Ford is not about pubic hairs on a coke bottle.
Grassley and the old Republicans who thought they could bluster and bully their way through have run into the Me Too buzz saw.
If they vote for him now, shove him on the Court both are permanently tainted.

(15,290 posts)Media is marveling at Trump's self control not tweeting or raging about Kavanaugh, but imho, that's because Trump doesn't care one way or the other about him. He's got a list with more rw judges on it. Kavanaugh's highly disposable if he becomes too damaged. Trump is wary of Kavanaugh being an "establishment" guy from the Bush circle, too.
Kavanaugh's McGahn's boy and if Kavanaugh goes down, McGahn gets all the blame and probably a quicker exit from the WH.

FBaggins
(26,773 posts)Yes... the general principle (even though this isn't a criminal trial) is that he has a right to face his accuser, exceptions are often made in the case of sexual assault accusations.
The "no time limit" ask might get by, but they would likely require her to stick to her story - not opinion on larger societal issues or whatever.
The "no female attorney" is nonsense. Not only is it offensive, but it hurts her because it makes it look like they aren't interested in getting to the truth... they want the visual of a bunch of old white guys grilling an appealing female victim. Don't get me wrong... I'd love to see that too... but it has no bearing on whether or not the trial is fair.
The investigation request is, of course, reasonable... but their denial isn't hard for them to defend. She won't get that.
I don't "get" the claim that he needs to testify first. Maybe her hope was to ask him difficult questions (Kamala Harris please)... then say what she has to say and then refuse to answer questions (maybe even leave)... but defendants don't ever testify first. What would they be testifying to if there isn't first an accusation under oath?
bench scientist
(1,107 posts)Kavanaugh wants the Supreme Court he has to get by the Senate. Senators are supposed to advise, and consent, not some lad lawyer they pick to do their jobs for them.
FBaggins
(26,773 posts)Thats quite a bit more like a trial than a job interview... and the Senate uses staff attorneys for questioning all the time.
No female attorneys... only questions from old white guys isnt likely to be something they have any desire to grant. And since what they actually want is for her to refuse to testify, she doesnt have a whole lot of leverage.
Yupster
(14,308 posts)You can't ask someone to defend himself and then have the accuser make the accusation after he defended himself.
That's just ridiculous.
Imagine a court system where the defendant takes the stand and defends himself and then the prosecutor tells the jury what he's accused of. Sounds like Kaftka.

(576 posts)I think DR. FORD is using her expertise in setting up an unwinnable situation for BK and the old white racist Senate Republicans.
Behavioral probabilities she has modeled.
A situation she knows self involved powerful men will try to win. She has public opinion on her side and is making sure that the price that is paid, after BK will be installed will be severe in the fall elections.
I think she knows that in order to get rid of Brett K., Democrats will need to get the majorities to impeach him.

(21,816 posts)1) Dr. Ford took and passed a polygraph. Judge Kavanaugh refuses to take a polygraph.
2) Dr. Ford named a specific witness. The Republicans refuse to force that witness to testify under oath.
3) The Republicans knew in advance this charge was coming. Why else would they have a pre-made list of 65 women vouching for High Schooler Kavanaugh's character?
4) Dr. Ford has requested an FBI investigation into her own allegations. The Republicans refuse an FBI investigation. Who looks guilty here?
5) Dr. Ford, her lawyers, and the Democrats want a delay in the proceedings until this issue is sorted out. Republicans refuse any delays. Why? Do they know more dirt is out there on Kavanaugh and they want to lock this up before it sees the light of day?
bucolic_frolic
(43,342 posts)and the way they treat women. This is like 2018 vs 1925. Where was this Democratic fight for Merrick Garland?
Once Trump's poor judgment is shown to have consequences, we have them on the run, and all in the 7 weeks until Election Day. May the Blue Wave grow, may we deliver the TKO to get these stooges off the stage forever!
bigbrother05
(5,995 posts)McConnell refused to even allow interviews, much less a hearing.
It was obvious that if public hearings were held, Garland's demeanor and record would clearly show his qualifications to serve and temperament to be a balanced voice on the court. His record was as a moderate and consensus builder.
At 66 yo (now) would mean his time on the court would be 20-25 years, not the 35-40 for a Kavanaugh.
It's clear to everyone that Obama nominated a slam dunk candidate and McConnell used a slam shut tactic.
