This is a re-post of a post I read on another page.... While I am sad a fellow man died, I just traveled to see the traveling "Healing Wall" and watched videos about this war I feel bad for the 58K plus men and women who died during the same war...most without any thanks... They are the true war heroes.
"I found this nice little McCain tribute in the comment section of a post about him....sums him up perfectly"
A war hero doesnt finish 894th out of 899 and still get stationed at a Navy champagne unit and promoted ahead of all but two of his 898 other classmates.
A war hero doesnt crash three U.S. Navy jets out of sheer incompetence and ineptitude, including two during non-combat training sessions.
A war hero doesnt get written up on drunk-and-disorderly, fraternization, disobeying orders, and insubordination charges more than two dozen times in less than three years.
A war hero doesnt get promoted to squadron commander of the air field named after his own grandfather immediately after crashing his third airplane.
A war hero doesnt have all the military records that cover his time in Vietnam and all disciplinary actions against him censored and sealed as a matter of national security.
A war hero doesnt get 28 medals awarded all after-the-fact for bravery for no other reason than being shot down and captured and then go on a celebrity public relations tour because hes the son of two acclaimed Navy admirals.
A war hero doesnt repeatedly cheat on the wife whos back in the states waiting for him, and then cheat on her more when he returns to the states, and then divorce and abandon her.
A war hero doesnt systematically vote against every single pay and benefit increase for military and veterans throughout his entire political career, all the while claiming to be the soldiers Congressman, and then take credit for the passage of a G.I. benefits bill he that voted AGAINST.
A war hero McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom. McCains second crash occurred while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, Timberg wrote, he took out some power lines [reminiscent of the 1998 incident in which a Marine Corps jet sliced through the cables of a gondola at an Italian ski resort, killing 20] which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral.
McCains third crash three occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. Timberg reported that McCain radioed, Ive got a flameout and went through standard relight procedures three times before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain landed on a deserted beach moments before the plane slammed into a clump of trees.
McCains fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when McCains A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. McCain ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi.
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals. McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat, explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. Since McCain got 28 medals, Bell continues, that equals out to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys grunts on the ground who had more than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where Im sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison."

About the man who was the Republican Party's candidate for President of the United States in 2008. No Democrat I know would write shit like this. None.

(7,239 posts)They are usually a Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: about Obama's birth in Kenya, Michelle Obama's bare arms or college thesis, Colin Kaepernick, Muslim/immigrants, Welfare, Hillary, Hillary's Parkinson's, the Clinton Foundation, George Soros, Valerie Jarrett, Benghazi, Jade Helm, Agenda 21, any twist of facts on guns, Maxine Waters, Obamacare = "Soshilism!", "Free stuff", and the long time classic that sets the Reich's hair on fire every time - Nancy Pelosi. All of them wrong - and not one of them is signed, and none of them sourced. And that's why there is no "origin". This is a dis-information campaign.
I probably have a thousand of them in a file.
As for "Reich", I regularly use it for "Reich-wing" instead of saying "right-wing".
And I started do that after reading John Dean's book, "Conservatives Without Conscience." Early in the book Dean describes his conversation with Prof. Robert Altemeyer who has studied authoritarianism for decades, and Altemeyer's 2006 book, "The Authoritarians" - wherein he draws the direct line from conservative Republicans - to authoritarians.

(982 posts)The only statement in this writing that is true is McCain did graduate 5th from the bottom of his class and McCain mentioned that fact during a commencement speech he gave.
McCain did crash three planes* and you can draw your own conclusions as to how he kept his wings anyway. As I understand it, one such incident was generally enough for other Navy pilots to lose theirs. Also he freely admits that getting shot down over Hanoi was a result of his not employing standard evasive maneuvers when targeted. There's plenty more in that list that is more right than wrong but I haven't the time or inclination to research it for you.
Just because McCain hated Rump doesn't make him a hero in my eyes. And before you jump in with "he refused early release" he was ordered to do that, as were the others in captivity--"no one goes home until everyone goes home." Only (I believe) 12 of the 600-ish POWs disobeyed. Of those 12 at least 8 were court-martialed (one I know wasn't, and faced no criticism either: he had memorized the names of hundreds of those held).
*one was due to a malfunction but imo we can include being shot down over Hanoi; see why above

(876 posts)The republicans work as a collective and they only see what they want to see. They cherry pick a few anthems and stereotypes and apply them ad nauseum.
When I pointed this out to a few of my right wing coworkers they all acted as if it did not matter.
The words from the Simon and Garfunkel song " The Boxer " kept ringing in my head. "All lies in jest when a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."
They will be pointing and laughing at trump the same way that they are now treating their old heroes.
