power crisis, truth crisis...
I was just away for the weekend feeling really lucky - I was asked to speak at a gardening event at Monticello. Though I peeked in here now and then, it really was three days out of the sphere of constantly breaking, insane trumpnews.
I am back and starting to immerse myself - listened to a few things on NPR while in the car this morning, catching up on some things here, and on TPM and Slate.
All I can see is that rocks are getting turned over left and right - rocks where abhorrent behavior was flourishing - whether it is the mind blowing Kavanaugh topic, the Russia/Rosentein/Trump bullshit, and on and on.
Maybe it is because walking through Monticello and hearing about the conflicting views held by Jefferson - his separation of church and state (yet watching that becoming totally eroded by the power of today's business of religion - I swear we could hear Jefferson turning in his grave) - his bizarre "all men are created equal" while happily owning so many slaves and fathering children with Sally Hemmings (a topic that they thankfully now address head on at Monticello - it was utterly ignored until just a few years ago) - but I drew the parallel to today's views on many white males and people of different color, different heritage, different orientation, different sex. (and yes, I am an old white male...)
Perhaps we are finally seeing everything - and I mean everything - coming to a head. Trump as president makes no sense - it simply shouldn't be (and wouldn't be without malfeasance by Russia). His views - and views held by his uninformed, ignorant sycophant followers - simply shouldn't be - they are indecent.
So - as I sit here and reengage (maybe not fully - I don't want to completely erase the joy of speaking about gardening to an engaged audience at such an amazing venue) - maybe having the perspective of having unplugged for a long weekend - all I know is that a smaller and ever decreasing slice of our country is bringing it to the brink because they can't conceive of losing what they see is their privilege to do whatever they want to whoever they want.
It is sad, it is sick - and it can't be allowed to continue. As to what the next act will be - how we release ourselves from this madness - I've absolutely no idea. Certainly, getting out and voting in huge numbers will help - but more is needed. Courage, true leadership - and truth and decency and kindness - are needed.
and....yes, I think that these people are truly evil.

(13,364 posts)We are better than this, as a people. The old white patriarchy is no longer a reflection of the people, and they are terrified.

It's a very sad day here. But not in Moscow.

Jefferson was far from perfect (not the least was his chickening out of serving in the war) and Hamilton, Adams and the rest weren't all that much better. But, what we had back then were serious debates about what kind of country we wanted to be, and in those days we managed to be led by the best ideas of all sides.
It's time again to rise up and argue amongst ourselves on the direction of the nation, and not just with slogans.
