New Yorker Article on Russian Interference in election perhaps being decisive

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/10/01/how-russia-helped-to-swing-the-election-for-trump?mbid=social_twitter

snip:
Politicians may be too timid to explore the subject, but a new book from, of all places, Oxford University Press promises to be incendiary. “Cyberwar: How Russian Hackers and Trolls Helped Elect a President—What We Don’t, Can’t, and Do Know,” by Kathleen Hall Jamieson, a professor of communications at the University of Pennsylvania, dares to ask—and even attempts to answer—whether Russian meddling had a decisive impact in 2016. Jamieson offers a forensic analysis of the available evidence and concludes that Russia very likely delivered Trump’s victory.

A must read article leading to a must read book.

There were actual recounts in Wisconsin and Michigan, reviewed by the Washington Post and they also found no votes were changed.

The article isn't supported by polling data. It wasn't until the late October Comey letter that Clinton fell to within range of losing. The Russian influence may have been necessary, but it clearly wasn't sufficient.

They targeted a specific group of voters. Unless you knew one of these voters and had discussions with them then you really didn't get the full picture. They were bombarding their Facebook feeds with very professional looking fake stories, and it was all extremely coordinated with Trump's message about Hillary. Trump would give a speech that referenced and insane story, but he'd leave the details out so it didn't sound as batshit crazy to the rest of the public. The target voter would then go, see, Hillary killed a bunch of people, Trump knows it too and he's the only one we can trust.

It was very carefully orchestrated. The guy I know just kept saying, "Man, if it was any other candidate other than Hillary, but she's just done so many heinous things." Those heinous things were fiction

with all those detailed questions about your beliefs contributed to the knowledge base to make that happen.

That was the tool that allowed for the microtargeting of messaging - from "Hillary is no feminist because she said something to her friends about the women who accused her husband," to"DNC goons roughed up Sanders to get him to concede to HRC," depending on your age, your financial status, education level, consumer preferences, etc.

The Russian fake news effort go the voter lists from the GOP, they knew exactly which voters to target and they augmented them with Data Analytica profiles too.

But I think people overlook the coordination that these stories had with the campaign. Trump's message was always touching on the most prevalent fake stories, and those fake stories would always reinforce what Trump said at his rallies. The Russians and Trump worked in harmony for the last few months of the campaign. That type of coordination doesn't just happen by one side playing off the other side, it happens when both sides are talking every day. I have zero doubt that Trump's campaign was vetting the fake stories daily and helping plan their timing and messaging. It was all way too synchronized to just be an independent group trying to help a candidate without their knowledge.

It was an incredibly powerful and effective method. It would even play on real news stories with stuff like, "Here's the rest of the story about Hillary's fainting spell." Then Trump would have a couple key points from those stories that he'd hammer home and it would look like the truth.

Right now you're seeing the Reps flounder so far in the mid terms and a large part of that has to do with Facebook cleaning up their platform.
