AZ-06: Democrat Anita Malik smacks Schweikert down in debate.

Schweikert at various times throughout the debate appeared to talk down to Malik.

Striking a lecturing tone, Schweikert at one point said that under the old tax rules, the top taxpayers accounted for 84 percent of the nation’s tax revenues. Now, that rises to 87 percent, he said.

“Turns out 87 is bigger than 84,” he said. “There’s even some preliminary data out there that for the first time in decades we may be seeing income inequality actually having some gap closing.”

Malik shot back at what she characterized as Schweikert's condescension.

“I have seen that Americans are stretched paycheck to paycheck,” Malik said. “You are focusing on tax breaks and things for corporations. Yes, I know 87 is larger than 84, so thank you for that condescension. But what about that corporate tax break? That corporate tax break is what I’m talking about.”

Schweikert apologized, but maintained that the tax cuts have fueled an economy that is lifting people who have struggled for a decade.
