While reading about Tesla, a subject of occasional interest to me, I came across the name "John Trump." I thought "What? Nahhh...can't be a relative."
Turns out, he was Fred's brother, and paternal uncle to the current mess that occupies the WH. He started out building houses with his brother, but they had "differing expectations" (no details given) , and the brothers dissolved the partnership. We have plenty of information on what Fred did, but what about John?
He decided to put his brain and education to work, having graduated from New York University (Tandon School of Engineering),
Columbia University and MIT.
Some notable achievements include:
- Worked on the development, in tandem with Robert J. Van de Graaf, of - you guessed it --the Van de Graaf generator.
- Invented electron beam sterilization of waste water.
- Developed rotational radiation therapy for treatment of cancer.
- Worked in several capacities during WW2, applying science to the war effort, mostly with the NDRC. It appears he was mostly an overseer, as opposed to a lab scientist doing actual hands-on development.
(Some of my background research is pretty shoddy. I apologize, but this wasn't an item of vital importance to me, so I just skimmed the high points.)
It would seem that the youngest sibling in that generation was in the position of having most of the positive attributes in the family "flow downhill" to him, so to speak.
Another name that turned up was Vannevar Bush. I was quite intrigued by this information, but, alas, no relation to Prescott and the Georges, et al.
