FLIPPABLE: Saralyn Tabachnick for Juneau, Alaska Mayor (Oct. 2)

After 31 years at AWARE (16 as Executive Director), Saralyn is excited to take her public service to the next level as Juneau's next mayor. Ms. Tabachnick's experience at a multi-million dollar social service agency uniquely positions her to lead the City and Borough of Juneau to a more robust and vibrant future.

Saralyn believes everyone has something to contribute, and it’s the job of local government to allow everyone to contribute. For infants and seniors and every age in between, Juneau must be a place that meets the needs of our neighbors and families-- from child care to post-secondary education, from affordable housing to aging in place. In doing this, we must acknowledge our history of inequity, and create a future that includes all of us.

Juneau is dealing with an opioid crisis that significantly impacts all of us and our communal sense of security and safety. Alaska also has some of the highest rates of domestic and sexual assaults, which also impact all of us. With more than 30 years of dealing with Juneau's most vulnerable population, Saralyn has the skill set to navigate these very real - and serious - problems. It won’t be easy but, together, we can create a safer Juneau.

There was a time when Juneau was cut off from the rest of Southeast, the rest of the state, the Lower 48 and beyond. That is no longer the case. We can - and will - grow our economy based on the new realities of working in a tech-savvy global market. It is time for our community to expand our thinking about what is possible for Juneau.
