I'm posting this in GD to ask my art friends help as I don't usually post in the Lounge...
I suddenly have some weird problem saving pictures off the Internet to My Pictures on my pc. If I can't save images, I cannot continue the Challenge past the 3 future Challenges I have already saved.
Here's the problem: My Pictures has disappeared from my drop down window choices when I click "save image as" on a picture on the Internet. I managed to click it in such a way to make it vanish and I don't know how to get it back.
If this must be moved to the Lounge I will understand. Or if someone would just pm me I would very much appreciate it...
thanks, folks. It would break my heart to stop the Challenge over something stupid that I did...

(68,644 posts)Check the dialog box to see where it's sending it.
If you don't see a path, then do a search after the save to see where it's going.
I suspect something's happened and it's not going to your desktop like it used to.

(63,912 posts)What I really need is for My Pictures to appear as an option under my documents. I can get there from My Recent Documents but it is laborious.

(68,644 posts)I do not, however, know how to define a destination folder on your computer and OS.
Often it's a "browse" button or option in the dialogue box.

(63,912 posts)If I could restore My Pictures as one of the options to that listing, all would be well. But I CAN get to it otherwise, just not easily nor quickly.

the most common error is that while clicking the directory, you inadvertently moved it inside another directory. It's unfortunately impossible to accurately determine the problem without more info.
Do you know what a file path is? If you open one of the pictures you already have and can find in your system, write the file path for us, that will be helpful. (it should be at the top of the window)
i.e; C:\user\documents\desktop\My Pictures\filename.jpg
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)guess by now!
Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)Start with which version of windows you're using. M$ has changed their directory structure several times, so know which one you have is kind of important.

(63,912 posts)I arrange my pictures in folders in My Pictures. That way, they are all in one place when I do a Challenge (I go to tinypic.com to get the pictures and display them on DU). Every folder is a separate Challenge. It's just an organizing tool.
So is the picture itself the file or is the folder the file or is something else the file?

(13,985 posts)What are those chalanges you guys are refering to? Are they part of a game?

(149,719 posts)We have to tell him what the answer is to the question that he posts. For instance, who are the artists, where are the pictures from, and like that. The whole thing is a challenge.
It's a lot of fun!
darkangel218
(13,985 posts)And if yes, in which forum is the chalange posted? I would like to give it a shot
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)However, if I don't get this computer issue solved, after 3 weeks I'm screwed...and so is the Challenge...
But I'll be around next Friday so if you are available, please drop in. We'd love to see you!

(13,985 posts)I really hope you get the puter fixed. Have you tried rebooting it?

Here is the latest ones. However the answers have been posted and appear at the top of each picture: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=1106065
It's just a little Challenge I cooked up so I could get folks to start talking about art, which is my passion. I started it in late March, 2010 and it's been going strong since then...

The answer will be simple but we need to know

(17,742 posts)Go to "Start" ... "Run" and then type cmd and hit enter
A box will open and at the top it will say which version of windows you have...

(17,742 posts)I've never seen that response to typing cmd in the "Run" box. I assume it must mean you are running a 64-bit version of windows. I'm on a WinXP box right now so can't check myself..
But don't worry, we'll figure it out soon, just give it a few minutes

(63,912 posts)I am, however, a bit under the weather tonight...I will respond and do whatever you tell me to, but I may be a bit out of it for awhile, until my stomach settles down...

(17,742 posts)(this is just to find out for us which OS you are using)
Go to "Start" then find "Control Panel" then (hopefully) find "System" and click on it to tell you about your system.
Again, I'm on a WinXP box but I know things are different on a Vista or Win7 box....

(17,742 posts)so I can figure it out on mine... be back soon...
in the meantime, this is where I'm looking first:

Reading that may be helpful?
Duer 157099
(17,742 posts)It will sound complex but it really isn't, and hopefully your system is just like mine so that you can do exactly as I describe. And hopefully this at least provides a workaround to the problem. There might be a much more direct easy solution.
From this link:
http://www.techrepublic.com/article/customize-the-places-bar-in-windows-xp/5630305
Go to "Start", then "Run" and then type gpedit.msc
assuming that launches the Group Policy Editor.... find your way down the directory to:
User Configuration |
Administrative Templates |
Windows Components |
Windows Explorer |
Common Open File Dialog
Double-click the "Items Displayed In Places Bar" setting.
In the resulting dialog box, select the "Enabled" option.
Type MyPictures (or the path C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Pictures )
Then OK/Apply or whatever to get out of there.
Not sure this will add the MyPictures back to the drop down, but it should put it on a sidebar thingy. Try to save an image and see if this work?
Here is an even better link describing that method:

(63,912 posts)suggestion. I'm a bit lost in the weeds at this point, to say the least (in addition to my stomach issues last night, which weren't fun to deal with).
I'll be back to you and let you know how it all turned out...
Thank you again! I appreciate your efforts!

(63,912 posts)Evidently, I had dragged and dropped My Pictures somewhere I shouldn't have, without knowing it! I am told this is called "fat fingering," altho in my case I would call it "stutter fingering"! It took several steps but it is now in proper working order.
I think I should have told folks here that I use Mozilla Firefox for the Internet, or at least I think that is pertinent, based on the instructions I got to fix it...
THANK YOU EVERYONE! You were all so caring and helpful and I can't love you guys enough for taking the time to offer assistance. I am forever grateful to you.
