Every GOP campaign strategist and Hill staffer wishes they had the button to open the trap door under Rachel Mitchells chair. What a total and complete Political disaster for Republicans.

So far, this could not have gone any better.

And even if they didn't, they could have pulled the plug at any point.
They just can't help themselves.

(90,773 posts)I was glued to my tv for the Anita Hill hearings, and that was enough for one lifetime. I looked for (but could never find) a button or bumpersticker that said I BELIEVE ANITA HILL.
So it's an optical disaster for the GOP? Good. Now let's see if they still shove him onto the Court.

(11,744 posts)Republicans/Conservatives are wired to believe that they way they perceive the world is the way it should be. I mean everybody is wired that way to some extent, but Liberals tend to be able to integrate new information and make changes in existing notions where Conservatives resist.
To a Republican/Conservative it seems almost impossible to accept that the principles behind conservatism are flawed and should be changed where necessary. It isn't conservatism that fails, it is people who fail conservatism.
This mentality allows them to come up with the stupid idea of putting a woman prosecutor up to question a survivor who has shown nothing but integrity throughout the process, and thinking it would have a good outcome for them. Like you said, Miller is a prosecutor, her job is typically to go after perpetrators of crimes. Granted if Ford was really lying or doing this maliciously, then there would be a point to all of this, but it has been pretty obvious that she has integrity. Remember however, to the Conservatives, it cannot be that the way they view this is wrong, it has to be how "others" are failing to implement their view. Miller is a convenient scapegoat.

(5,522 posts)Thats what Republican Senators would have done. Theres such a thing as common decency. Ford is not on trial.
Her job is to uncover the truth. It is not to intimidate the victim. Half of these salty Republicans thought Mitchell was going to uncover some Democratic conspiracy. Its ridiculous...

(16,973 posts)so alarmingly credible and likeable. It seemed Mitchell was headed in certain directions but couldn't gain much traction. She was clearly trying to set up scenarios about who financed Ford.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)so she knows that you have to handle sex crime victims and children with kid gloves. If you go after them or are too rough, it backfires.
The Repubs should have hired a political hack, if that's what they wanted.
Mitchell also had little time to prepare. The announcements was just yesterday that they'd hired her.
R B Garr
(16,973 posts)interview to conduct for victims to also be a backhand towards Feinstein, etc., as if the best interview was deliberately avoided for political reasons. Mitchell didn't seem to be too concerned that the victim was ready, willing, and able for an FBI investigation, which would have taken more time. I see what you're saying, but I guess we saw different aspects of Mitchell. I do agree that she wasn't able to land any punches, and as a partisan selection, I'm sure she wanted to discredit Ford. She did get in at the end that no one recalls the party. Overall, I just didn't see Mitchell able to gain any traction against Ford.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Yes, Mitchell got some minor points in. That's her job. But she didn't go after the jugular, which is what the Repubs wanted. She couldn't do that, because that backfires with a sex victim and a child.
So Mitchell did a good job, objectively. But not for the Repubs, and not for the Democrats. Just a clarifying force.
