It's pretty clear that the message from Trump going into yesterday's hearing was that they all needed to be tougher; to fight tooth and nail. Macho bravado and FURIOUS indignation were the order of the day.
And so we got a belligerent Bully Boy Brett, sneering and politically attacking the Clintons, the Democrats his accusers. He looked like he had been snorting testosterone, and I half expected to see steam coming from his nostrils like the bull in a cartoon bullfight. Alternately screaming and blubbering, aggressively turning the questions back at the Democratic senators. I could easily imagine a drunk Brett Kavanaugh attacking a 15 year old Christine Blasey with no regard for anything but his own sick need to dominate, to score a win. He sure showed that Senator Klobuchar, didn't he?
Old man Grassley was so intent upon smearing Diane Feinstein that he forgot to introduce Dr. Ford. The contempt for DiFi expressed by the Republican committee members was a living breathing presence in that small room. Their boy Brett would have easily sailed onto the Supreme Court if it weren't for that annoying b_ err woman!
And then what can I say about the performance of Lindsay Graham? What was THAT?
Of course they grossly miscalculated the reaction of women, of evolved men, of victims of sexual abuse and the people who care about them. Sexual abuse hot lines saw a more than 200% increase in calls yesterday. We called Senators' offices, we protested and two amazing women confronted Senator Flake on an elevator, demanding he look them in the eye to SEE their pain and their anguish.
WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED. WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED.
Today was one small victory, but the tide has turned. Do not give up.

(9,655 posts)Guess what was on the TV? Yep. And she stood there and said "I feel so sorry for that man."
She was practically crying for him.
It took everything I had to not throw up on her carpet. She's in her 80's, worships
the ground her very conservative son walks on, and anything or anyone he supports, she supports.
No questions asked.
Oh, she's been married three times. The first two husbands were abusive. You would think that THAT
alone would have been enough for her to put her support behind Dr. Ford.

I have to keep saying that to myself. There is no point in trying to discuss anything with them.

Demographic trends are bad enough for them, but add in that the GOP is almost all Tea Party along with the small group of plutocrats that fund them. That means their primaries will produce candidates that are more and more right-wing at the same time voters are moving away from them.
Hurry up assholes, the Whigs are waiting for you.

(4,484 posts)I know we talk about changing demographics forever, but there is a point where they just can't keep up with it. You can only win the White House while losing the popular vote so many times. Same with the House and Senate.
Eventually, it will change because America is changing. These 15, 16, and 17-year-olds will eventually be in their 40's and 50's. Those demographics are increasingly liberal, especially on social issues. These people in their 20's and 30's will eventually be in the 60's and 70's and those are the demographic's that vote the most.
It just sucks that it is taking so much time.
But it is telling how desperate they got in this last election. They got so desperate they throw out all decorum and still managed to only squeak out the White House on a technicality while losing by 3 million votes.
That is unsustainable in the long run.
They will either have to convince liberal youth to join them, Latinos to join them, African Americans to join them, LGBTQ+ Americans to join them, the vast majority of women to join them, the vast majority of Jewish Americans, or the vast majority of Asian Americans (of which only 14% identify as Republican) or they will die out.
Those are their only options and I don't see them doing any of those things.

Sinclair TV and Clearchannel (or whatever it changed its name to) control information in the majority landscape of our country. If the minority peeps and young people don't have facts, they are only going to vote as their parents did.

(4,484 posts)We need to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. Thing went downhill FAST once that was out of the window.
There out to be laws about opinion shows and the need to clearly label Opinions as opinions. Maybe flash "THIS IS AN OPINION" at the bottom of the screen in all caps.
But you are right on the information gap, we have to fix that if we want faster, more meaningful change.

(137 posts)There is no way by Tuesday Kavanagh would have gotten in. The 9:30-1:30 would have happened including flake elevator ride. The group would have gotten together and decided not to vote for him without fbi investigation and it would have been over. Now republicans have a 10 percent chance. I think fbi will come back with concerns on Kavanaghs answers. They will not arrest him but will send a report that is questionable on his honesty without coming out saying hes a liar. If I am right, game over.

I was in the car when they played the exchange on the radio and it brought me to tears. I had to stop everything I was doing. I just couldn't believe anyone with a heart could hear them and not be at least a little moved.
They reminded me what we are fighting for and that it is a righteous cause that IS worth fighting for.
If they are brave enough to go to DC and stand up to a Senator in person, telling such a deeply personal moment. God, it makes me ask what I'm doing with my life and how I can be doing more. Hearing them made me want to be a better person.

Thinking to some of the other Court nominees that were confirmed, those right wingers we didn't like, they for one reason or another presented an intellectual side, a paternal flash, a concern, a weighed arbiter even if they weren't one, they might have been brainy but aloof, or overly bright. This guy just seems an evasive, nasty wise-ass.

This man does not belong anywhere near the Supreme Court.

(4,723 posts)Believe me when I say Brett Kavanaugh would look down with condescension on many who classify themselves that way. To anyone--ANYONE-- with so much as a modicum of decency, yesterday's display of unbridled arrogance and entitlement was sickening. That display of temper, of unbridled rage, should make it obvious to anyone that the man is unfit to sit on ANY court of law, much less the Supreme Court of the United States.

(14,565 posts)No need to ask a question. Matter of factly scolded him under exactly the theme you emphasized, that his attitude revealed unfit to serve on any court of law

(4,723 posts)That is the kicker with this man. Was there ANY vetting? Attempted rape (that we know of). Drinking problems. Money issues that could leave him open to blackmail. Lying under oath. The attitude ALONE should raise red flags. And yet, all this other baggage. Quite obvious why the Republicans wanted to jam this nominee through and withhold massive amounts of documents.

(725 posts)Just like with Trump, Republicans don't care what crimes he committed and will push him through. Then we have a seated judge who hates Democrats for the next 30-40 years. The only silver lining is this has been terrible publicity for Republicans going into the midterms.
I hate independents and non-voters for handing Republicans the supreme court. They're like children. As always Republicans royally **** up and they come crawling back to Democrats after decades of irreparable damage is done.
PA Democrat
(13,225 posts)I agree that if seated, he will use his position on the Supreme Court to rule against progressive causes in retribution for having his fitness questioned. Joe Scarborough admitted on Morning Joe that Clarence Thomas moved to the right on his opinions as a result of his anger over the Anita Hill hearings.
I do hold some hope that there will be more evidence of sexual assault/ inappropriate behavior that could sway enough votes to block his confirmation. But in the meantime, every day that his confirmation is delayed I believe there will be more negative information uncovered. More people will see video of the unbridled rage and very un-judicial behavior displayed by Kavanaugh at Thursday's hearing. I think he will slip further in the polls as will Trump and his band of merry misogynists.
