(2,795 posts)I hope we can rid this senate of Ted Cruz. What an awful, sniveling ghoul.

(11,885 posts)And say many , many former republicans are now in Beto's camp, and hate ted Cruz. They're running away from all republicans, and especially ted cruz now. No one lies that much that isn't corrupt.

(23,555 posts)But, I'm so glad the tide is changing. Austin is not that big of a town to get such a huge turnout. It's very encouraging.

(22,267 posts)Down here, folks tend to vote for the top line of the ballot and nothing else. It's obvious when total vote in a precinct is 1000, the top line gets 500 and the down ballot gets 350.

(15,139 posts)in light of Cruz's support of an attempted rapist for a seat in the Supreme Court, rise up, vote, and rid the Senate of one of its most despicable assholes.

(638 posts)That is some kind of a turnout to a rally. Hopefully, he'll be able to turn those folks out to vote as well.

(22,267 posts)His opponent didn't have any money and didn't have the charisma and moxie that Beto has to get the money raised.
The other reason is the R primary was a 5 way and the runoff was between Rafael and a fairly moderate R. Nobody ever remembers to vote in a runoff down here, so Cruz's team had a stronger GOTV. Factor in the Spanish last name which drew Hispanic voters and you have it.
I do not think Latino voters are falling for that last name this year, especially since Beto is fluent in Spanish and Rafael can barely speak it.

With the caveat that I havent been to that many US Senate campaign rallies, last nights Beto ORourke rally felt like more like a presidential campaign rally than anything other than, well, a presidential campaign rally.

(42,770 posts)Invite. No one checked anyone on entry.
They may have "invited" that many. It was a great experience tho. Beautiful night ..view of skyline...friendly people ..lots of pot...he was brilliantly passionate and unabashedly liberal.

(90,737 posts)I thought about this during the Bush admin, when the Park Service suddenly wouldn't give crowd counts any more. Helicopters were overhead at every protest and rally I was at during those years, from brightly colored news copters to very serious looking matte black copters -- so I knew damn well that somebody knew how many people were in the crowds. Yet WaPo consistently lied to us (or took someone's word for it) about the numbers, and only changed their reporting when people posted many photos.
Just one way: take overhead photos, lay out a grid, and count the people in just a few squares of the grid. Multiply by the number of squares the grid covers. A helicopter makes this easy, but even a few people taking observations from a selection of tall buildings could do it.
For a small city, task several people to stand on a street corner with camera, clip board, and clicker. Count how many are marching abreast, estimate how many are filling a block, etc. etc. Multiply.
For a stadium or auditorium, it's certainly easy. The capacity is publicly posted, and the Fire Marshall will see that it is not exceeded due to safety concerns. If the stadium is filled to capacity, voila, you have your crowd count. If it is not filled, see above. Tickets -- whether free or not -- get collected at the door or gate. They get counted.

(42,770 posts)All. It's a big 38 acre park. For this event at least, People swarmed in from different points. No tickets...no organizer types, no real rules. In fact, only saw two policeman the entire time. It really was such a great thing - freedom from metal detectors, rules about how you can't do this or can't do that. No one watching you. And people happy and just treating each other like friends. It was almost like an honor system.
Maybe the city or Parks Dept will report.but in the big scheme of things...guess it doesn't matter that the crowd was grossly overstated. It was great being there and so encouraging to see so many red staters cheer in the liberal agenda.

(58,785 posts)I suspect he doesn't admit it to himself, but reportedly his largest rally crowd ever, in 2015, may have been 30,000.
(His left-wing populist counterpart, Bernie Sanders, drew some crowds almost as large as Trump's, and they were both appealing to angry populists. So that no doubt pulled down Trump's primary #s a bit, and presumably many of those among Sanders' following who were populists then went on to vote Trump in the GE.)
