Limited screen time linked to improved cognition in children, study suggests
Previous research has shown that excessive screen time may damage the brain, especially regions responsible for emotional processing, decision-making, attention and cognitive control.
A recent 10-year, cross-sectional observational study published in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health journal adds to the body of work suggesting a link between screen time and lowered cognition.
Scientists from Ontario, Canada assessed the behavior of 4,524 American children aged 8-11 from 20 different study sites between Sept. 1, 2016, and Sept. 15, 2017, for the research. The team administered questionnaires and collected data on how much recreational time the children spent on their screens, their sleep schedules, exercise regimens and other factors influencing youth mental health.
Each child was also tested for cognitive skills, such as language, memory and attention.
