(42,770 posts)AUSTIN U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Beto ORourke are struggling to pick a new date for their second debate after the one scheduled for Sunday was postponed due to Cruzs hectic schedule in Washington.
The uncertainty surrounding the confirmation process for U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh prompted Cruzs team Friday to postpone the debate in the close race for the Republican's Senate seat.
Early reports had indicated that the full Senate would vote on Kavanaugh's nomination over the weekend. However, the full vote was delayed to allow the FBI to further investigate sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh.
At 10 p.m. Friday, after hours of confusion and speculation surrounding the confirmation vote, Cruzs team offered to pick up where the campaigns had left off and proceed with a Sunday debate in Houston.
However, ORourke already had found something else to do, according to emails provided to the El Paso Times by Cruzs campaign.
"So ... wild day, Jeff Roe, Cruz's campaign manager, wrote in an email sent Friday night to O'Rourke's campaign, officials at the University of Houston and representatives of the television stations hosting the debate.
"With all the craziness today sen Schumer and McConnell got together and allowed tomorrow to be a voice vote so attendance was not required," Roe wrote. " Cruz) is on the last flight home tonight and will be campaigning tomorrow and can debate if we want to pull the rip cord Sunday to keep the debate. David, hosts and stations?

The Sunday debate between Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Beto ORourke, D-El Paso, has been postponed amid the chaos in Washington, D.C. over the U.S. Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh.
"The Sept. 30 debate between Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Beto ORourke at the University of Houston has been postponed," the university said in a Facebook post on Friday. "Senator Cruz will be in Washington, D.C. for weekend votes. UH, Univision 45 and ABC-13 are working with the campaigns to find a new date to reschedule."
The highly-anticipated second of three scheduled debates was set to be a town hall-style exchange at the University of Houston that would air in most of Texas' media markets.
The first debate took place on Sept. 21 and was a rollicking clash in which both candidates generally argued for the national party's positions on a litany of issues, including immigration and law enforcement.
The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one.
An attempt to reschedule will be somewhat complicated by the fact that Cruz will be casting votes in the U.S. Senate for much of October. The U.S. House is set to adjourn until the midterms on Friday.
The final debate is scheduled for Oct. 16.

(42,770 posts)as activism at all. Marble Falls/Kingsland can imagine are really red. But, wow, Austin is a totally different story. I hadn't actually stayed there in a while until last weekend. What an open and free city! Any event I have been to in a long time - have dozens of rules, metal detectors, purse searches, etc. Not Austin. the rally was wide open field - park across the river from downtown. No ticket taking - no single secure entry - no rules about what you could take in. Nothing. and it was fantastic - everyone just getting along and happy and respecting each other not because someone made them - but just because.
BTW, not typical of Central Texas - but there are dozens and dozens and dozens of Beto signs here.
