He said, "I like beer", present tense. So that tells me that he still likes beer. He's not sober. He's not on the wagon. He's not in AA. He still drinks. Maybe not as much as when he was young, but he still drinks.

so what? Lots of people drink beer. And other stuff. And aren't drunks.
I'm not trying to defend Kavanaugh, but if any nominee's confirmation depends on them not drinking alcoholic beverages, the government will collapse.

It's extremely difficult for a person who drank as heavily as he is reported to have done to scale it back to a reasonable level of drinking. Binge drinkers rarely become social drinkers later in life.
