It's about ATTEMPTED RAPE!! And so it is about the drinking because Ford says Kavanaugh was inebriated when it happened and if Kavanaugh denies that he was ever really sloshed in his life, then the question IS about his drinking!!!!

(8,678 posts)Like oh I didnt mean it that way or I didnt realize it back then or you misunderstood what I was saying. Its fairly easy to talk your way out of a lie in a situation like this. There would have to be clear proof he made a direct intentional lie while fully aware of the truth. That would likely be hard to prove.

(12,344 posts)It's an investigation for the benefit of 3 Repub Senators. Kavanaugh was pretty adamant about certain things. If the FBI says his assertions appeared to be, shall we say, contrary to fact, then those three may conclude that he lied and vote against him. Or they may conclude he lied and vote for him anyway. But I hope not.

(8,678 posts)I don't think we can know that for sure. We can say he probably lied but I doubt we can say for sure for the reasons I stated before.

(34,073 posts)Those are things that are easy to prove.
There are other things that are not so easlyto prove - but he made a classic mistake of putting ego above honest. Renata alumni, perhaps not 9although it is pretty clear from the context). But boofing, Devil's triangle, FFFFourth of July - those have clear urban slang meanings that he wanted associated with him at the time. Now they make him look like a member of Animal House. He doesn't like that image at the moment - so he lied about small crap. Very easily proven.

Maybe he could wriggle his way out of it somehow, but he issued such categorical statements that there doesn't seem to be a lot of space to do that.

(8,678 posts)The issue is convincing a couple of Repubs and they will likely need more clear evidence.

(8,445 posts)The reason he (allegedly, cough, cough) attempted to rape Dr. Ford wasn't because he was drunk. It's because he's a person who has it in himself to sexually assault someone. And he's also a drunk. And he's also a liar.

(1,074 posts)I'm happy to get him on something so if the lying is what gets him, great! But I bet the rethugs will do a lot of grandstanding and say "what's the big deal??! So what if he perjured himself. Lying is no big deal!"

(3,433 posts)If he has a drinking problem, the fact that he doesn't admit it would make it worse.
As I understand it drinking doesn't make someone a bad or mean person. If someone does things that are bad or mean when they are drunk, it is because they are inherently a bad or mean person. The reason that they don't do bad things when they are sober is because they have learned to behave like a normal person to get along in society. The alcohol diminishes their reasoning.

(31,261 posts)He may have been a boys out when sober, but when drunk he became vicious and aggressive, just what Dr. Ford said he was like when he attacked her. I believe that he could rape someone when drunk, but rape is rape, drunk or sober.

Drinking to blackout, raping, lying about everything, shouting at Senators, blaming a Clinton conspiracy.....shows he has terrible judgement.
