I was just reading an email from a longtime reader. He makes a simple point. As the debate is currently structured, if the FBI cannot turn up significant evidence to back up one of the abuse or assault claims against Kavanaugh, he gets confirmed. The copious evidence of deception and outright lies does not appear to be part of the equation right now.
This is, to put it mildly, very unfortunate.
There really shouldnt be any level of lying that is okay for a Supreme Court Justice, certainly not as part of the confirmation process itself. But even if you set aside whether hes telling the truth about Blasey Ford and Ramirez, Kavanaugh has clearly lied about his drinking as a young man. (President Trump himself seemed to unintentionally concede that point this morning when he said it was clear Kavanaugh had a problem with alchohol as a young man something that Kavanaugh clearly did not concede.) Hes also clearly lied about various aspects about his yearbook and other behaviors, issues which really arent relevant in themselves other than Kavanaughs willingness to lie about them. Nor did it even begin with the claims of sexual assault and abuse. He just as clearly lied and has repeatedly going back several years about his role in and connection to the Manny Miranda email hacking scandal.

(2,580 posts)Not only did BK lie under oath about the yearbook terms and his drinking to excess problem , he previously lied under
oath :
@SenatorLeahy emails were stolen by an @OrrinHatch staff member and given to #Kavanaugh .
Boofer Brett then lied and lied about this.
That alone disqualifies him.#KavaNOPE
Throw in his lie about the legal drinking age of his youth and clear patterns of deception emerge in addition to a trail of felonies.
Just out:
Although Kavanaugh testified under oath that he first learned of the 2nd allegation of sexual assault (Ramirez) against him after the New Yorker story ran, texts with classmates suggest he was not being truthful.

(2,580 posts)WASHINGTON GOP Sen. Jeff Flake and Democratic Sen. Chris Coons are in agreement: If FBI investigators find that Brett Kavanaugh lied while testifying before senators last week, his Supreme Court nomination is done.
"If Brett Kavanaugh is shown to have lied to the committee, nomination's over?" Scott Pelley of "60 Minutes" asked the two senators during an interview that aired Sunday night.
"Oh, yes," Flake, an Arizona Republican, replied.
"I would think so," Coons, a Delaware Democrat, added.
doesn't seem like much gray area here.
