The word "Beer" is intended to lessen the seriousness of alcoholism

We know Judge Kavanaugh likes "beer". He has stated it many times.

But, that would not make him less of an "alcoholic". Nobody asked if he ever drank the hard stuff?

And since Trump accuses the Democrats of playing "dirty", perhaps the Democrats should request that the FBI ask Kavanaugh's wife whether or not he has a drinking problem? Would that be playing too "dirty"? If anyone would know, it would be the wife, would it not?

Also, when Trump says he never has had a drink of alcohol, he seems to be taking glasses of wine out of the mix that he is pictured drinking. Do they really put apple juice or grape juice in his glass???

Quite a few live around me.

My heart goes out to Ashley and her girls. I think Brent Kavanaugh is a liar and self serving man. I look at pictures of her and the girls and she looks reasonably happy but not so much when she and Kav are together alone- even at when GW Bush was nominating him. She always seems to have this over controlled expression at those official times. This may be just my prejudice but it is what I see. No matter how this turns out wife and daughters are injured.

He is absolutely an uber partisan who could never make fair and impartial judgements, and then there is his temperament and difficulty with the truth.

It is reported that, back in 1985 after an IB40 concert, Kavanaugh "threw ice" into the face of another bar patron. I am thinking that Kavanaugh had finished a mixed drink and flung the remaining ice at the patron.

Kavanaugh will drink anything he can get his hands on. At the hearing, he used the present tense saying, "I still like beer." I would bet big money that his breakfast Thursday included something in the grain family that had nothing to do with cereal. Pity that no Senator thought to ask.

...that there was over-whelming incompetence in choosing him without proper vetting? Just like Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort?

The Supreme Court position is not something that is "plowed thru". It requires thorough investigation.

It's a common shield of denial. Kavanaugh's repetition of the word was like he was brandishing that shield. And while he may consider himself a "beer drinker" that doesn't mean he doesn't touch the harder stuff. But he could still be an alcoholic if he doesn't. It's a common dodge to refute something one's done by refuting self-identification with the act. For example, when W said "America does not torture" he meant we don't self-identify that way but that still leaves the door open that we engaged in torture. And Nixon famously said "I am not a crook" because he didn't self-identify as your typical crook. Kavanaugh's defense is all about identity: he got into Yale (smart), captained the basketball team (a leader), worked his butt off (a hard worker), etc., because that's his identity and it's dear to him because it's a privileged one, and he thinks that may be enough to get him by and it may just do that.

They just drank a lot more of it - and they got in trouble just as frequently, maybe more often since it's so readily available - at any gas station/convenience store here in New York on their way home.
