White House Corrects Official Transcript of Trump's 'Thinking' Jab at ABC's Cecilia Vega

On Monday, we posted about President Donald Trump taking a swipe at ABC’s Cecilia Vega with the headline: “Did Trump Insult ABC News Reporter Cecilia Vega and Tell Her She ‘Never’ Thinks?” The original answer, according to the official White House transcript, was no. But now, amid criticism, that answer has changed.

The exchange between Trump and Vega, during a Monday news conference in the White House Rose Garden, went like this:

Trump: “She’s shocked that I picked her. She’s like in a state of shock.”

Vega: “I’m not. Thank you, Mr. President.”

Trump: “That’s okay, I know you’re not thinking. You never do.”

Vega: “I’m sorry?”

Trump: “No, go ahead.”

Originally, the White House quoted the president as saying “I know you’re not thanking,” instead of “I know you’re not thinking.” But, as flagged by the Washington Post‘s Aaron Blake, the White House has amended the transcript:

It appears that what happened is that when she didn't stand up immediately to ask her question and Trump said "She's in a state of shock," she then replied, "I'm not. Thank you, Mr. President," and he heard, "I'm not thinking, Mr. President."

So he came back with his incredibly witty reply, "I know you're not thinking, you never do."

Then they tried to cover up the mess by changing the transcript to:

"I'm not. Thank you, Mr. President."
"I know you're not thanking, you never do."

And when they got caught out, and realized that the edit made no sense whatsoever, they changed it back to what he actually said.

Thus not only is Trump a rude asshole, he wasn't even being clever when he thought he was.

Why do they even try to conceal it as it's a point of pride with him?
