Federal authorities announce new arrests stemming from Unite the Right

"Federal agents have arrested multiple individuals on charges related to the August 2017 Unite the Rally, authorities said Tuesday.

An official said several people have been arrested. The charges are under seal but will be revealed at a press conference Tuesday afternoon, he said.

He said the charges are not directly related to the death of Heather Heyer, 32, who died when a car driven by James Alex Fields Jr. plowed into a group of counterprotesters. The Charlottesville rally, planned in response to the removal of Confederate monuments throughout the country, quickly devolved into rolling disorders and fights on Aug. 12, 2017. The evening before, white supremacists held a torchlit march at the University of Virginia, which also turned into a scuffle between marchers, activists and bystanders.

Seventeen criminal cases related to the rally have so far been brought before area judges, resulting in several convictions. Before Tuesday, the only federal criminal case was that of Fields."
