secretary in 2004. I think somebody needs to interview their daughters, because I get a really creepy feeling about him.

on the very first day of hearings. All that talk about his mom, the Catholic Church, and coaching his girls' sports teams.
His blubbering testimony at the latest hearing with Dr. Ford sealed the deal for me. Creepy guy. Ick.
Edit to change blundering to blubbering. Damn autocorrect.

he probably had a "born again" moment. A lot of people who can't stop drinking will hit bottom and find Jesus. Also, deeply religious people take the "washing away of sin" like they really are a new person. It must be hard to live with the awful person one was - but being "born again" makes it better. What I think is strange is that he still appears to be a drinker... although I admit I'm not an expert and can't say for sure... he just looks and acts like one.

(6,856 posts)It is not uncommon in Irish culture, even watered down Irish American culture, for straight males to marry late or not at all. Irish batchelor is a saying. It is an indulgence allowed both male and female, but more particularly male. (See JFK/married late) Large families in Ireland meant there was no way to make a living unless you were oldest and inherited the land. Marrying late or not at all became a trend. Also, less pressure to reproduce since other siblings in large families would produce grandchildren. It is rarer and rarer today, but still common in my extended Irish family, to marry late.
Kavanaugh was an only child in an Irish Catholic family ... very rare. Still, the social pressure to marry young would not be as great as in other cultural groups. He would have felt pressure, however, to achieve academically and in sports. In an Irish family, to have a scholar or athlete in the family causes parents to overlook serious problems like alcohol, gambling, carousing.
Im not saying that Kavanaugh is a prototypical Irish American; Im just saying his personal situation would never raise any eyebrows amongst my older Irish American relatives. The only non-Irish thing about him is the name Brett.
Didnt know how different we were culturally until I attended Baptist-affiliated college. Baptists like to marry their kids off early to avoid sin. Irish Catholics, in my day, had to avoid divorce at all costs, and were extremely keen on higher education, so it could be celibacy or many one night stands to avoid serious commitments until after graduate school.
So... he could be a rapey incel but the status of unmarried at 37 would not necessarily raise questions in his family. Just not that unusual.
