Travel alert! Raped in Jamaica: Detroit woman turns gun on attacker at 5-star hotel

It was the last night of their Jamaican getaway at the 5-star hotel.

Two Detroit women were soaking in the comforts of their room one last time. One was Facetiming a friend on the balcony; the other was plopped down on her bed listening to music.

For five days, this had been their comfort zone, their safety zone. And then their world changed.

At 11:15 p.m. Thursday, a gunman crawled up their balcony and barged into their second-floor room at the Hotel Riu Reggae. He raped them both, authorities say.

The nightmare lasted for about 15 minutes until one of the women got hold of the gun and shot the attacker twice before he jumped off the balcony and fled.

“At night, it really haunts me. All I see is his eyes,” the victim who shot the suspect said in an exclusive interview with the Free Press on Monday. “I just want to know why.

The festering crime problem that has been plaguing St James jolted the tourism sector on Thursday night when a gunman barged into a hotel room in Montego Bay and raped two female tourists before he lost possession of his weapon and was shot by one of the visitors.

After he was shot, the gunman allegedly jumped over a balcony and fled. The weapon, which was reportedly stolen from the room of another guest, was turned over to the police.

"Based on our initial investigations, the gunman was employed to the hotel two days ago as an entertainment coordinator, so it was not someone who walked in off the street," a police officer told The Gleaner. "The gun he had in his possession was stolen from the room of another guest, who is a licensed firearm holder."

POLICE REPORT
According to police reports, at approximately 11:15 p.m., the two visitors, who are from Detroit in the United States, were in their room at the Riu Reggae Hotel in Ironshore, Montego Bay, when a man, who was armed with a handgun, walked in on them. With gun in hand, the man demanded that they perform various sexual acts on him.

No one employed two days before as an entertainment coorinatonr would have had access to rooms (to get that gun) or would have known the layout to escape the way he did.

People can't even enjoy a vacation in peace. Lock him up.
