Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum enjoyed another high attendance rally in a deep red part of Florida, this time Martin County.
Gillum addressed about 1,500 people in Stuart after completing a boat tour of areas on Floridas east coast struck by toxic algal blooms.
Crowds of this size in Martin County are unheard of, said campaign communications director Johanna Cervone.
The energy and enthusiasm for Mayor Gillum and his vision for a Florida that works for everyone is incredible. Day after day, were seeing record crowds for Mayor Gillum in some of Floridas most conservative areas. This movement is growing. As toxic algae and red tide hurt our economy and make people sick, Floridians are ready for a leader who will take on the special interests and make our environment a priority.
Part of the reason the crowd seems so surprising? Republican President Donald Trump carried Stuart with 65 percent of the vote to Democrat Hillary Clintons 35 percent.

(14,565 posts)My parents had many friends who moved from Miami to Stuart after retiring.
I'll make this blunt: Most of them are now dead. The senior citizen population is changing as that Silent Generation ages and is replaced by younger Baby Boomers, who are more Democratic.

(1,295 posts)I guess FL will still have a Democratic state legislature, but are there any executive actions a governor can take on that front? Based on how the Republican state legislature restricted the new Democratic governor in North Carolina after 2016, I would guess that the answer is no.

(82,849 posts)Go to the hostile areas, buck up the local supporters, talk directly to people who don't support you (without the Fox filter), let them see and hear you for themselves. You don't have to flip a 65-35 district, but if you can make it 60-40, you can go a long way toward clinching a majority.
