In South Africa: "Castrate rapists, says ANC Women's League"

People are getting seriously pissed off about sexual assault and rape, it seems.

While South Africans are still reeling from the shock of two rape cases that have recently come before the courts, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) has called for the chemical castration of rapists and those who attack women and children.

"We have tried our best. We have tried to raise awareness. We have tried to call for harsher sentences but in this instance, there's nothing that seems to lower down [the attacks]. Hence, we are calling for chemical castration, ANCWL secretrary general Meokgo Matuba said.

Their suggested punishment, however, hasn't been shown to work. Still, I understand their anger, without question.

to exact retribution on men who attack women and girls. I can't say I'd blame them, either.

I could see a minor way of doing that at schools. If girls told their friends about boys who engaged in sexual assault, I can imagine a dozen girls surrounding an offender during the lunch hour and publicizing his ugly behavior loudly and publicly. Shame would work wonders on teenage boys, I think. That might work well in the workplace, too.

Maybe it's time for combined action on the part of people who are victims. Maybe it's time to call assaulters and rapey people out in public. Maybe.
