The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank soon will receive an influx of meat, fruit, dairy and other food as a result of the Trump administrations tariff policies.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is purchasing just over $1.2 billion in commodities from domestic farmers and diverting those purchases to local emergency food programs nationwide, including food banks and school lunch programs.
As an organization with a mission to feed people in need, and one that serves more than 100,000 people a month, we are developing a plan to receive a significant amount of surplus food in the first quarter of 2019, said Lisa Scales, president and CEO at the food bank.
Food programs will receive the shipments between December and March.
