Michelle Bachmann just said "The pilgrims came here to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ......"

HOLY S***! Kindergartners even know that the Pilgrims left England to escape religious persecution. This woman is truly, truly nuts. I wish Rachel would have commented on that, but she didn't.

The pilgrims did come to the US so they could practice their brand of religion instead of a state sanctioned religion, kinda like what these candidates want to do now.

The Pilgirms DID come to spread the Gospel...their personal interpretation of it.

but the 1600s job market was really bad in "new" england. Food was scarce so they turned to prayer and conservatism. Aaron fashioned the golden calf but he wasn't happy about it.

14. A little background on the "purer-than-thou" pilgrims:

In a way, they were the religious extremists of their age, rejecting much of the progress on the Renaissance and certainly rejecting anything the Enlightenment had to offer. They left an england they considered beneath them - filthy with idolatry and sin and so forth. In a way, they prefigure the self-righteous purer-than-thou figurehead-assholes and that keep popping up (and running for office) here.
