Let them try. Ever visit Breitbart? Holy cow - a sewer of racism, misogyny, anti-semitism (any article mentioning Jarad Kushner). I'd put all those comments in an online ad in a heartbeat. And remember, I'm a NYer who remembers how after Sandy, all of a sudden there needed to be offsets to help us out. I'll never forget that.

I offered no opinion regarding the efficacy of such a tactic. I simply pointed out that wingnut assholes such as Limbaugh, Carlson, Ingraham, et al, are not above grabbing a comment from an anonymous lefty poster and attempting to use it to tar the entire progressive movement.
I personally do not celebrate tornadoes kicking the shit out of Oklahoma, Kansas, and the rest of Tornado Alley, nor do I enjoy watching storms of any nature devastate various bits of Wingnutistan.
Maybe that's just me.

and I hope that's not what you got from my post. Just pointing out that through all the hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, fires, whatever, you NEVER heard any NYer or anyone else from a state that gives more to the feds than they get back talk about the cost or even asked for thanks. Not until a storm hit NY, NJ, CT - all states that are "donor" states - did anyone all of a sudden give a crap about offsets. And I'll never forget that. They HATE us.

We stayed at Carabelle Beach one year on our way home from a big family trip. It's such a beautiful are and more like old Florida not being built up. Fishing towns along the lovely coast. Hurricane Dennis that it the year before we were there. If it weren't for the almost routine devastation I'd lobby my husband to move there. As much as I love arid Colorado I'd still move.

We live in FL and my friend lives in Denver and he keeps lobbying us to move there. The couple times I've visited him there I fell in love with the place.

It's old-hat to him but those mountains amaze me. I doubt we ever will move but if we start thinking about it, CO is at the top of the list.

Btw, I've lived here since 1976 and the mountains are still an awesome sight to us. We're in north Lakewood, so about 8 miles due west of downtown Denver. Being able to see the mountains from a few windows is a joy.

I was born and raised in Queens, NYC quite near the beaches. So I'm an island person at heart. No surprise that a part of Florida speaks to me. Carabelle, Sopchoppy. *Sigh*. But the mountains here make up for the ocean, every bit.

Come on up!

The Sopchoppy folks made black-strap molasses and they all thought it was great fun to watch the expression on my 9 year old face the first time I tried it. My grandma laughed about that til the day she died. That was 45 years ago and I still remember that awful taste.

I'll holler next time we go up there! My friend is in Highland Ranch and I just heard from another friend who moved there this summer.

the Puerto Rico mess...I'd like to follow up w/ the Carolinas and the mess that they are in after their hurricane dumped loads of water on them...I'd bet that folks there are having issues w/ insurance due to flood water issues and not specifically hurricane related damages (insurance policies etc. clearly differ on how the damage was caused (water damages) and thus pay or not pay.

Hopes and thoughts for all involved. Don't wish anyone to suffer but unfortunately some will.

by wealthy people, a very large number of whom are from out of state. How will Florida residents respond to this? Gov. Scott's running for senator, so he'll likely do something like his best, but the best for lower-income residents of course isn't the same best as that given the more affluent.

60 Minutes just showed their piece again on one of the disappearing islands in the Chesapeake Bay. Residents are basically low income and vote heavily conservative, and they showed one still insisting on the local line that there is no sea level rise, just erosion -- which they of course are asking for massive infusion of federal tax dollars to stop.

Wed Oct 10, 2018, 02:00 PM

From Marc Caputo's political playbook today:

"IN CHARGE AND ON AIR — As we wrote yesterday , hurricanes can be a political boon to politicians, and Gov. Rick Scott stands to reap the most politically from the storm, which gives the state's top executive an unrivaled platform to be seen leading, especially on the nonpolitical Weather Channel. In just one day, Tuesday, Scott's name was mentioned 5,831 times, according to the TVEyes tracking service. His Democratic rival, Sen. Bill Nelson, had a tenth of that, 598 mentions. In the race for governor, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum also got on the Weather Channel and CNN and earned 558 mentions. His Republican rival, Ron DeSantis, 298 mentions."
