It's unclear what Trump intended, other than to stress, in an equally strident manner, that Grant was a drunk and, despite that, he defeated Lee. And that Grant was "from here" (he wasn't). And that, finally, people are beginning to recognize that Grant was also, BTW, a great general, which was completely unknown during his entire eight years as President.

Imagine Angela Merkel calling Hitler "a great leader" who was eventually defeated by a crippled President who some thought was a secret Jew, but is finally being recognized for his heretofore unknown prowess. That's what Trump just did. Did you watch the video?

Trump is a moron, but he (or whoever wrote his speech/told him to say this) was clearly trying to make the point that Grant should be viewed positively since he was able to defeat Lee.

I don't think it was an accident that his extemporaneous remarks seemed to praise Lee - who Trump also called "incredible". I'd guess that more of his audience were sympathetic to Lee than to Grant.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if he told the same story in other places.
