Tell Obama and Congress: No Compromise on Social Security and Medicare

http://act.rootsaction.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6464

The Romney-Ryan platform includes big cuts to Social Security and Medicare. But here's something President Obama told the New York Times last week:

"He particularly believes that Democrats do not receive enough credit for their willingness to accept cuts in Medicare and Social Security."

It's time we asked the President and every member of Congress to commit to not cutting a dime from Medicare or Social Security.

You're creating a straw man. You're reading things into his words. You're parsing his words.

What he really meant by those words is that he'll NEVER cut ANY fundamental social programs never ever.

There should be MASSIVE protests everywhere Ryan and Romney go, because they represent nothing short of a war on the people.

And it is just as important to be at every Obama event, to pin him down publicly, and force him to make a stand on opposing austerity and not cutting safety nets. Nothing like the Grand Bargain, ever again. If he is going to run as a champion of the people, he needs to vow to do that in specifics.

We have had enough. It is time for the people to make clear loudly, forcefully, and continually that we will not accept a war on us from those who are supposed to represent us.

"Tell Obama and Congress: No Compromise on Social Security and Medicare"

...the demand, but that is not a direct quote. In fact, it editorializing and completely without context.

"He particularly believes that Democrats do not receive enough credit for their willingness to accept cuts in Medicare and Social Security."

Everyone know that the the cuts the President proposed are not to benefits, but rather to wasteful spending.

and anyone viewing that critically can see that.

Here is where the editorializing came from. It is the authors "He believes"

As president, however, he has come to believe the news media have had a role in frustrating his ambitions to change the terms of the country’s political discussion. He particularly believes that Democrats do not receive enough credit for their willingness to accept cuts in Medicare and Social Security, while Republicans oppose almost any tax increase to reduce the deficit.

The Medicare cuts, passed in the Affordable Care Act, come in the form of reimbursement reductions to hospitals, Medicaid prescription drugs and supplemental private insurance plans under Medicare Advantage. The Congressional Budget Office projects that they’ll extend the solvency of Medicare by eight years.

AARP, the seniors’ lobby and chief gatekeeper of Medicare benefits, endorsed the Affordable Care Act despite its cuts, arguing that they wouldn’t affect seniors’ access to care. The law expanded benefits by closing the prescription drug coverage gap known as the “doughnut hole.” The hospital and drug industries also endorsed the legislation, believing that the additional customers via the coverage expansion would more than make up for the cuts.

...

The Congressional Budget Office projects that Ryan’s plan would raise seniors’ out-of-pocket expenses by $6,500 per year.

Obama’s long-term plan to save Medicare, approved under the Affordable Care Act, is to set up a panel of 15 Senate-confirmed experts tasked with issuing proposals to rein in the growth of spending if it exceeds a certain level. The Independent Payment Advisory Board, or IPAB, may only propose cuts to providers, not beneficiaries. Congress may replace the cuts by passing its own or with a three-fifths super-majority.

Yes there were cuts, it was in the reimbursements to INSURANCE PROVIDERS, hospitals, and reimbursements to drug companies. It had nothing to do with beneficiary cuts.
