(108,980 posts)as an ID other than for the government.
In fact, if someone asks for it (like a college), you can ask them to use another identifier instead.

(28,270 posts)The first damn thing nearly every entity asks for is your social security number!
If that's a law its the most widely broken law on the books by far!

(4,492 posts)On the federal I-9 form, it is a list C document (along with a birth certificate). It proves you can work and that's it.

(34,074 posts)Do some research on who would be disenfranchised (and deprived of other rights dependent on the nationa ID card). You can start by doing a search here for voter ID back in the mid 2000s, when a few misguided people here were advocating for it.
As a start, replace your driver's license early with a compliant one. It required 6 pieces of ID to renew my driver's license last menth - and I happen to have all of the documents available to me. If I had a different last name from the one I was born with, it would have required 7.
Think for a few seconds about what would happen to these folks: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/us-is-denying-passports-to-americans-along-the-border-throwing-their-citizenship-into-question/2018/08/29/1d630e84-a0da-11e8-a3dd-2a1991f075d5_story.html?utm_term=.35ebeaba221c
Or others who were born at home in an era when home births were not necessarily recorded - or were refused recording by the white establishment.
All the money in the world can't buy documentation that does not exist - and when someone talks about free ID they typically mean only no fee to request one, not truly cost free. Getting a copy of a birth certificate or marriage license (needed to document citizenship and name change) can cost $25 - $100 each.

(51,607 posts)Since I live near the Mexican border the Border Patrol can stop me for no reason whatsoever. They are allowed to within 100 miles of a border. Anyone living on a coast needs to know that that is considered a border. So if you live in NJ (coastal) you can be stopped if you are writhing 100 miles of the shore.
Check out this map...

lol, the Brits are the same.
To be fair I kind of get it after living in Spain. You need to show your number to sneeze here.
That said most nations do require some kind of national ID and the sky hasn't fallen on them.

(27,559 posts)Giving our Social Security # and DL/State ID. You know essentially the government forced states to create 50 different versions if a national ID with their 'real' ID law. Now, red States use it as a way to suppress voting...
Any worse? You already have it de facto

Also, in the US we have a concept known as innocent until proven guilty. A national ID card would violate this concept. Because, it is incumbent upon the State to prove you're not a citizen via due process. Not by requiring you to carry a piece of paper demonstrating your citizeness. A paper makes the paper the citizen and not the person carrying it.

(29,674 posts)It will be considered a state's rights issue and I think any argument that a state offers will probably be held up in court. Real ID has been fought by numerous states and is considered by some (my state included) to be intrusive.

(56,582 posts)IDK. I've lived in multiple countries where you just get an ID card when you're born and replace it every few years and it's just not a thing. Then the drivers license doesn't need to have biometrics, it can just be a named endorsement.

(4,492 posts)Most of them have a burden of proof in order to get one (6 points in NJ). I had to replace my birth certificate (4 points) when I went to renew my drivers' license and had to show my ID (in this case photocopy) when I ordered my birth certificate. It's a catch 22 situation unless you (or your parents) have all of your original documents.
Not to mention that a trip to the DMV isn't the quickest trip in the world.

(703 posts)From Costa Rica. Have had it since birth and not a single thing has happened as a result of it. Its like having a birth certificate. There is nothing wrong with having one for the US, despite the fear mongers.
People who cant obtain one now cant obtain ANY ID. So there is no difference for people who were born at home, etc. And we have to start somewhere. The National ID would be linked to your current address as a voter registration and it would be shown at the booths.
None of this NRA ID yet no college ID crap. Everyone shows the same thing to vote and there would be less disenfranchisement.
Any time you move would be the only time you would have to update the current address.
