Here's where Democrats are really picking up Trump voters

COLUMBUS, Ohio

“I think it’s all about the dignity of work,” says Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in an interview in the back seat of his Chevy Suburban. “I talk about how we value work. People who get up every day and work hard and do what we expect of them should be able to get ahead. I don’t think they hear that enough from Republicans or national Democrats.”

It is an old-fashioned theme much favored by Brown, who proudly sees himself as a labor Democrat. But it is also a direct response to the 2016 political catastrophe for Brown’s party across the Midwest — and especially in Ohio.

One bottom-line truth of American politics is that given the way the electoral college operates, Democrats need to reverse the flight of the white working class to President Trump’s GOP. Ohio is ground zero this year in testing the durability of Trump’s coalition.

In Brown’s quest for reelection, the appeal to workers is working. While Ohio swung from a three-point victory for Barack Obama in 2012 to an eight-point Trump win, Brown has enjoyed leads from 13 to 18 points over Republican Rep. James B. Renacci in three polls over the past month.

Democrats are not counting on that sort of margin for Brown, but even coming in at half that range would underscore the fragility of Trump’s hold on his own electorate.

actually, Republican voters. They don't understand that they are voting against their own best interests. They think they are voting for a type of South African apartheid where because they are white they will be valued over minorities. Actually, what will happen will be more like what happened in Chile with the Pinocet coup. Sure he killed or imprisoned everyone who was on the left, but those people on the left were fighting for the common man and woman. Chile ended up abolishing unions and pensions, taking over education so that only the rich became educated, basically privatizing everything under government control. It was all poor people who ended up suffering in Chile, of course those on the left suffered more because they were killed or imprisoned, their voices were silenced. I saw what Pinocet did to Chile, I worked there in 2002 and 2003.

Trump voters are being fooled into thinking that Trump is going to make life better for them when in fact they will find themselves in the same boat with the minorities they are hating on and voting against. We can see what has happened to the tax code. New revelations show that Jared Kushner hasn't paid taxes for 7 years. Our tax code makes it legal for rich people to avoid paying taxes, as Leona Helmsley said, taxes are for poor people. We will never stop spending money on the military so when our revenue dries up it will be poor working class people who are going to suffer. I saw it first hand in Chile, I watched entire families eating outside my restaurant, eating out of a dumpster. Honestly, their food may have been healthier than what we will be forced to eat.

What worries me is an on-line conversation I had with an old friend yesterday which was supposed to be about "separation of powers" and how they failed during the Kavanaugh hearings.

This "old friend" decided his "drop the mike" phrase was something like "Yeah, I know it was rigged, but It's all about winning, and we're winning!"

That kind of sports jock, locker-room mentality scares the crap out of me...there is no reasoning with them, it's IN YOUR FACE kind of dominance that they're after.

They may be being fooled by Trump but their over riding motivation for remaining GOPee voters is their vitriol for "libtards" that has been cultivated by hate radio, TV and internet sites like InfoWars and Breitbart with Faux Snooze these past 30 years or so.

I agree a million percent with the rest of your obvservations.

For many reasons, most white Americans have an irrational fear of "socialism" that keeps them from voting for government programs. The Republican Party has exploited this fear - and the racism that underlies much of the irrationality - to keep people voting against their interests.

A way out of this is to appeal to people's individual needs. Trump did this. Hillary's campaign slogan "stronger together" was a lost cause among whites whose racist fears have been stoked for decades by hate radio, Fox News, and lately, Russian propaganda. This includes all the very wealthy whites who happily vote Republican because they don't want to share.

It's very sad to me. I was raised to believe that America was great because of the diversity of our people. This idea seems gone now among many whites.

Sherrod Brown's approach might work.
