(658 posts)Trump's base may not pay attention, but you better believe some old school conservatives will.
Every vote counts. Every. Single. Vote.
If one republican is swayed, that's one more vote toward turning this ship around and getting the country out of this destructive storm we're in.
This is not 2016 and this country is no longer recognizable.
While the deplorables don't care, the majority of the country (dem, repub, indep) do.

(30,756 posts)that still get most of their news from newspapers. That is a respected conservative paper, too. I live fairly close to the Iowa border and we have property in Iowa.

So, no, I don't think old school conservatives will pay attention to this. If they haven't noticed Trump is a criminal bigot with the Republicans doing whatever he wants them to from the news, they won't be swayed by endorsements from a paper that actually leans Democratic.
Charlotte Little
(658 posts)If they aren't actually leaning conservative, then no, the conservatives won't.
But that kind of goes without saying and means nothing with respect to my point. My point is that if conservative newspapers, commentators, etc. denounce Trump and suggest voting GOP out, it WILL make a difference.
I know it's not sexy enough for MSM coverage, but there are former Trump voters who deeply regret it. Those are the voters who can (and I hope will) switch on a dime.

(4,341 posts)Not only the Russians, but the hackable voting system in the USA has allowed the cheating to go on, it can be detected, it should be a no-brainer, and that is one thing that has made me very upset about democrats, I don't see the fight to prevent that from happening.
An example...the disenfranchising in Georgia, this is not the fist time Kemp has done it, why haven't the democrats been ready for it? Why has it been allowed to happen again? Why wasn't he sued earlier to remove him from the secretary role?
Why is it that democrats are not fighting to get rid of the electoral college? Why have they not fought to demand sample papers from the electronic voting machines? Why is it that democrats have not demanded that firewalls be set behind the voting machines to prevent hacking?
I am very concerned that all of what I mentioned, and we all know there is more, could affect the outcome in November. So far all the polls point to positive results for democrats, in both the house and senate, why is it that democrats are not protecting that lead with processes that can prevent the cheating, which we all know WILL take place.

(779 posts)Georgia & Kemp: They were ready. Multiple lawsuits are pending. We are used to this crap in the South. It sucks, but the Dems are not in charge here.
Electoral college: Ever hear of the national popular vote compact? It's a viable solution. Another would be to increase the size of the House, and I'd like to hear more folks proposing it. Abolishing the EC outright will be nearly impossible, and that's why you don't hear Dems talking about it. It's a waste of time.
Paper ballots: According to this article, only 5 states still have electronic voting with no paper trail. GA is one, and there are plans in the works to change it by 2020.
https://politics.myajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/can-georgia-electronic-voting-machines-trusted/QQbzOXGzieODS64yu6cFjJ/
Firewalls: Voting machines in GA are not connected to the internet, per the above article. It's that way in most places, is my understanding.
My personal belief is that blaming our election losses on the other side cheating will tend to discourage folks on our side from voting. Yes, their dirty tricks must be called out, but most important is to let everyone know that their vote matters and is important.

(37,748 posts)I think if nothing else it's another positive indication of our momentum moving forward into the final weeks of the campaign.
It's an additional illustration of the consequences of our energy and drive, rather than the lethargy and hopeless, empty criticisms we're often faced with.

(snip)
Some have argued that this election should be a referendum on President Trump. We disagree. This is about Congress, which has abdicated much of its constitutional duty and has failed to provide a check and balance to the executive branch.
Not only has the party failed to act as a check on the president, key Republicans have been complicit in trying to obstruct and undermine the investigation of a foreign powers interference in a U.S. election. And by their silence they have tacitly endorsed the presidents racism, misogyny, white nationalism, divisiveness and crudity.
Highly refreshing to read this coming from the fly-over farm belt!
My new word for the day: crudity......

(2,067 posts)Im curious what Schaefer is using as his reasoning for believing that the Des Moines Register leans right. I think the DMR has endorsed exactly 1 Republican for President since the early 70s. Obviously the thought of a conservative paper endorsing Democrats is a great headline, but the facts just dont seem to support his label.

(43,259 posts)to erase the gilt on Old Abe's presidency, the one put there by northern business interests seeking unbridled freedom and exploitable labor to grab their fortune, and see Lincoln for the Big Business corporate lawyer/front man he really was, this wouldn't seem so surprising.
I suggest "Six Encounters with Lincoln" by Elizabeth Brown Pryor. She makes Abe seem like a racist hack or hick.
