Actually he isn't that hard core, I think he actually voted for President Obama (although one never knows what happens in the voting booth)
He isn't really "political" but is Republican because his father is and just says ignorant things like "the Democrats want to pay people not to work bla bla meme meme meme" but last night I got through his thick republican skull.
I will preface this by saying. My husband and I are crazy in love. We have been together since we were 18, we are 46 now, married for 20 years and more in love every day. I almost died when we had our second child and I am three years out from having breast cancer. So women's health issues strike a serious chord with him.
Normally, he doesn't answer the phone, I don't like to either, we figure that is why we have children so we never have to answer the phone or clear the table again Occasionally, when I do answer the phone I get the Republican surveys or the odd republican phone call which I have fun with. He normally just has no interest talking to anyone anyway.
Anyway, I sat down with him and talked to him about Paul Ryan's stand on Person-hood for zygotes, and not saving the life of the mother and no birth control, and he just sat there listened and then said to me in his normal very soft spoken voice, "The next time the republicans call, I want to talk to them!"
I know he realizes this election is about much more than tax policy now. This is about the lives of women, and it is more important than ever that these people not get in to office!!!!

(14,180 posts)he learns how batshit crazy the Repigs are, comes to his senses pretty quickly. If you'rei in the mood to tease him, you might tell him that he's now a "swing" voter (between crazy and sane

(16,230 posts)but that doesn't represent the general population. It's very important that we remember that. Most people can be reasoned with.
This is why when I see stupid right-wing arguments on places like FB, I often respond with cites or poke holes in their logic. It's not because I think I can sway them. It's because I think that I may be able to sway others who are also reading what they're saying.
Don't give up on reasoning with your Republican friends and family.

(10,303 posts)He's been there through good and bad with you. I think health issues period would strike a chord with anyone who has had to deal with them... and the health issues that one has to deal with personally are the ones that are closest to our hearts.
Congrats on surviving breast cancer. Congrats for having a wonderful family.
This is an important election, no doubt about it. I am also convinced Obama's plans are better for America overall. I would *love* for Romney to get less electoral votes than Mondale. I don't think that is going to happen though.
The more important thing than any of this IMO is family. Whilst there is no such thing as a "perfect family", it seems to me yours is filled with love. Meeting the fundamental basics - food, clothing, shelter, health, and security is an extremely close second. The Republican plan eats away at three of these five fundamentals. This threatens families. I will not stand for people eating away at the basics of life. If things turn extremely ugly I am fortunate that my family have an immediate "way out" to anywhere in the EU - but until then I'm going to do my little bit to keep America strong and fulfil my Bible verse in life (Luke 10:27)
All the best, Mark.

(4,309 posts)Sounds like he is seeing the light. I really think the women's healthcare issue is going to be key in this election and Obama is excellent in this regard. I know a middle-aged woman, formerly a McCain-Palin voter, who told me she is 100% for Obama because she is so sick of the GOP assault on women's rights.

(30,252 posts)But I was on my way out when I married ChickMagic in April 2000. My last GOP vote was cast that year for John McCain in the primary, and that was it.
Ginny was so patient with me. She was delighted when I finally turned Democratic in 2003.

(1,675 posts)I think that my husband is much more Democratic than he admits. He is a very smart man and that does not match up with the nonsense of the Republican party. I dont know if he will ever admit out loud that he agrees with me, I think he has more fun getting me worked up! LOL! But when all is said and done he knows what is right and would never vote for any of these rethuglicans!

(30,252 posts)I have to keep believing that.
There are, however, certain exceptions...

(62 posts)We parted after seventeen years.
My present wife and I are both Democrats and we've been together thirty two years.
I guess there's a moral there somewhere
