Iconic Dodge City moves its only polling place outside town

WICHITA, KAN.
Access to the ballot box in November will be more difficult for some people in Dodge City, where Hispanics now make up 60 percent of its population and have remade an iconic Wild West town that once was the destination of cowboys and buffalo hunters who frequented the Long Branch Saloon.
At a time when many rural towns are slowly dying, the arrival of two massive meatpacking plants boosted Dodge Citys economy and transformed its demographics as immigrants from Mexico and other countries flooded in to fill those jobs.
But the city located 160 miles (257 kilometers) west of Wichita has only one polling site for its 27,000 residents. Since 2002, the lone site was at the civic center just blocks from the local country club in the wealthy, white part of town. For this Novembers election, local officials have moved it outside the city limits to a facility more than a mile from the nearest bus stop, citing road construction that blocked the previous site.
It is shocking that we only have one polling place, but that is only kind of scratching the surface of the problem, said Johnny Dunlap, chairman of the Ford County Democratic Party. On top of that, not only is it irrational and ridiculous that we have only one polling place, but Dodge City is one of the few minority majority cities in the state.

(8,923 posts)Yes, Mexicans are considered part of the white race.
But I still wouldn't put it past them.

(33,413 posts)See ICE. This evil regime considers anyone who does not look, act, think, screech, and vote like them to be "foreign", "other", "not American". Mexicans hit all the buttons. (They are about 60% Mestizos and therefore have a stronger, older claim to "American" than almost all trumpers, but facts don't matter).
See also, Kobach and clones for voter suppression based on names that sound "foreign".

(1,382 posts)I believe both companies have offered free rides to the polls for the midterms.
Also have the local party sponsor a shuttle from either the old polling place, or from the bus stop.
These are not insurmountable problems, and could be a great outreach program.
This shouldnt happen in the first place, but in all reality most people have to travel more than one mile to get to the polls.

That's part of outreach.
It's fine that the companies are providing free service to polls, but how many people who don't use them normally will use them for that?

(1,382 posts)In the end the goal is to get everyone to the polls, so utilizing every offer is the best idea.
I understand not liking Uber or Lyft business models, but millions use them everyday, so if they are offering free rides to the polls, use them!
I mentioned the shuttle service in my first post, and that should be #1 priority, but Uber and Lyft will pick up voters right from their homes. If we could get taxi companies to do that for free I would advocate for that, but so far I havent seen them doing that.

(129,420 posts)Once the majority-black (67%) townsfolk ceded control to the white hoodlums who DID vote, because they did not choose to or were not aware of how or why to vote in the past, then they were subsequently kept in an oppressive and nightmarish state of being... literally unable to function, strapped with debt from bogus tickets and penalties for tickets, which inturn essentially made many of them ineligible TO vote in the future. It took much work from outside organizations and from the DOJ, the latter of which essentially went in, exposed and broke up most of the mess, and now the little city is picking up the pieces. In the immediate aftermath, they were able to elect 2 additional black City Council reps, and this year, Michael Brown's mother is running for a City Council seat.
There are thousands of towns like this full of disengaged people.... many who are struggling just to make ends meet and who don't have the time or energy or wherewithal to get "political"... and so those places often suffer.
It's literally like if you give them an inch, they will take a whole runway and then stomp you into the dirt so deep that you can't get back up again.

(129,420 posts)We have absentee ballots but that only applies for specific reasons. There is no "mail-in ballot" nor is there any "early voting".
I know I brought this up with my state Senator (a Democrat) a couple years ago at a telephone town hall, but it was obvious then that his hands were tied until we change some chamber in our legislature back to (D), so in the meantime, these sorts of efforts were going to be difficult. During later newsletters and email communications, the subject did come up again and there seemed to finally be some break in the wall against it, at least in terms of discussing it - and mainly because there is a big push by organizations including those involved in fair districting, to get legislation moving. However and IMHO, they should make it a state-wide ballot question (although I don't recall in almost 40 years of voting, whether there were ever any "state" ballot questions - all the ones I remember were local city ones)... But I doubt the GOP would allow that because they would lose.

(146,329 posts)Everyone is welcome. Let's all march to the polling place. There will be bands, horseback riders, floats for folks to ride on and a parade of cars and buses to help people who can't walk that far. The whole town should turn out for this.
