Official charged with murder after state rejects 'stand your ground' shooting of alleged shoplifter

The Florida city commissioner who confronted and shot an alleged shoplifter at a military surplus store earlier this month was charged with murder Friday.

Michael Dunn, who serves as Lakeland's city commissioner for the Southwest district, was confronting a man police said had taken a hatchet from the store he owns when he shot and killed him. Surveillance footage from the incident, which took place Oct. 3, was released on Monday.

Christobal Lopez, 50, was killed in the shooting.

Dunn was charged with second-degree murder on Friday. If convicted, he could spend up to life in prison.

It was one of those grab and run shopliftings with beer, the owner followed them out of the store and shot and killed one in the back while running across the street. The jury let him off.

in a downtown park.

His dumb ass lawyer stood before the media last night and claimed SYG was justified because the deceased individual was brandishing a hatchet.

Who ya going to believe, him or your lying eyes?

He forgot to mention the hatchet was in his pants and that video which LPD released.

I figured they would claim the hatchet stuffed in the victm’s pants was a weapon that made the gun-nut askeered and therefore he had no choice but to shoot.

I do believe in the Stand Your Ground law, however it's not being used in the manner it was intended by a select few.

I've been in a few life threatening situations and there are instances where I believe you have the right to defend yourself with lethal force if need be.

Chasing someone out of your store for a petty theft and shooting them in my opinion does not even come close to the intent of the law.

I hope such incidences doesn't incite people to rescind the Stand Your Ground law, because there are incidences where such a law is benefitial to prevent an innocent person from being wrongly convicted.

So you can shoot your spouse and put a knife in his or her cold dead hand? Much cheaper than a divorce lawyer.

should never kill anyone if possible. Life or death for you, seems cut and dry. A lost kid, a drunk or mental impairment might cause someone to enter mistakenly. Even a thief, I do not want to kill someone if I can avoid it. Never retreat sounds too black and white to me. Some unarmed little kid does not deserve death. At least with duty to retreat give a jury a chance to look at the whole picture.

Like I said..just me.

If your entire family is accounted for. I don't give a crap for what you steal, but if myself or my family is in jeopardy, then I see no reason to not defend them. Retreating from the home is often not the best option. Barricading in place is better and wait for the calvary.

The woman in Georgia that retreated all the way back to the bonus room and opened fired when the home invader entered that room had it exactly right. She had twin babies with her.

S.Y.G. has given every asshole that owns a gun, the hope that they get into a situation that might, maybe, could'a "just give me the chance to shot some muth'afucker."

Some of them have gotten that chance.

S.Y.G. has changed their attitude towards more permissive use of guns.

I think that the tide has turned. Even some legislators that pushed SYG have said that some interpretations of the law is too lenient toward shooters. Prosecutors are taking a keener look before accepting a SYG claim. To shoot a guy dead because he was going to punch you after a fender bender is not SYG, especially when you could have simply retreated from the punch then tell him that you have a gun and he should calm down and talk through things.

They take away the obligation to consider the situation and respond reasonably. If they're in your house, you can kill them.

There is no legal need to have anything beyond a right to self-defense (and, by extension, defense of others).
