Charles B. Johnson, who is believed to own the largest stake in the Giants, gave $1,000 this summer to Black Americans for the Presidents Agenda, a super PAC that supports President Trumps policies and conservative candidates, according to the groups financial disclosures.

(8,835 posts)It was a family thing.
I have participated for years on a private SF Giant blog and this is the issue today second only to the Dodger-Brewer game. Seems everyone including the blog owner is aghast.
The Giants and Charles Johnson have issued statements. The statements and discussion is at this link I cannot text to copy here.

Here is an article from Think Progress:

From a 2016 Huffington Post article Charles Johnson has a history of $$$ support for Trump and right wing causes.
"The main super PAC supporting Trump did not report its finances Saturday. It will next report in October. However, two other super PACs formed to boost the Republican nominee did disclose their donors.
Great America PAC, a super PAC run by longtime GOP consultant Ed Rollins, raised $2.4 million mostly from small donors. Its largest donation was a $100,000 contribution from San Francisco Giants owner Charles Johnson.
Hedge fund billionaire and conservative activist donor Bob Mercer provided $2 million to the Make America Number 1 super PAC. The group was formerly organized to support Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the Republican primary, but Mercer has since shifted his support to Trump. As a funder of the conservative website Breitbart, Mercer is an instrumental player in the many moving pieces of the infrastructure now making up the Trump campaign. He is also now one of the largest donors to Trumps election efforts."

(8,835 posts)The other link tells how in 2016 Charles Johnson gave $100,000 to a Trump and right wing backing PAC.
I could not get it to copy or would have copied it to DU so thank you.
No way do I defend Charles Johnson and I am not pleased with the Giants and how this has been handled so far by the team. The political aware Giants fans I know are pissed off or at least concerned because this is was incongruous with most Giants fans and how the team is perceived and marketed as a progressive sports franchise.
Could you post the team statement as well?

(28,270 posts)"The Giants' reputation as one of the most inclusive and socially engaged professional sports teams in the nation speaks for itself. We are unaware of Mr. Johnson's political donations because they are entirely separate from his stake in the Giants ownership group. In no way do the Giants condone this disturbing and divisive political activity."

(8,835 posts)Will be interesting to see what follows as Charles Johnson is one of the largest share owners.
The team has tended toward the progressive as state.
Very disappointing.

(28,270 posts)But the fact remains that the white billionaire owner of the S.F. Giants bankrolled a fake black republican racist campaign that in now even as we speak running on radio in Arkansas and the KC area. Possibly other places as well.
The denials of the owner and the club do nothing to stop the racist lies of this rich, white GOP front group.
I'm willing to bet a billionaire that really wanted to stop this outrage would at the very least drag these GOP assholes into a legal action to get his money back, claiming false pretenses but of course he knew damn good and well what they were gonna do with his money and approved of it!
