https://www.rawstory.com/2018/10/god-help-us-paul-krugman-warns-trump-just-tipped-off-hell-dems-take-house-infuriating/
In the first tweet, Krugman wrote, If Democrats dont at least take the House, God help us. But even if they do, well be facing a nightmarish political scene. Republicans will claim that the election was stolen, and deny the majoritys legitimacy.
He then noted that Trump appointee, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, is refusing to turn over documents to Congress with Trumps blessing, adding Wilkies defiance is a preview of what is to come.
Democrats will gain subpoena power but expect the Trump administration to simply defy requests for information, the way they already are on issues like the Mar a Lago crowds influence on the Veterans Administration, he tweeted, Theyll also probably abuse executive power in many other ways. And theyll use claims of voter fraud to justify their disregard of the law and Constitution. If you dont think this is going to happen, you havent been paying attention.
He then warned, In the very near future, many government officials will probably face hard decisions about whether to defy illegal orders from their political superiors. And remember, this is the good scenario.

(14,049 posts)The Republicans will react the same way that they have for EVERYTHING else:
They will move farther to the right.
Win an election? Move right. Lose an election? Move right. Stock market down? Move right. Stock market up? Move right. Start a war? Move right. End a war? Move right. Scandal? Move right. Indictments? Move right. Natural disaster? Move right...
Think there's no more no more rightward to move? They will astonish you.

Mind was one place, fingers didn't cooperate.

(20,219 posts)I just meant the next move once they cant move anymore rightward will be a Kristallnacht. (Which I dont really know how to spell).
I thought you made a good point about them moving more rightward every time theres a reaction against them.
ThoughtCriminal
(14,049 posts)Yes, I think they are capable of that. One to three more election cycles.

(754 posts)If there is a strong Democratic win, I expect the US to be ungovernable for the rest of Mr Trump's term.
I think there is a good possibility that the federal government will literally disintegrate, and what/whoever
is behind Mr Trump will move forward to a complete dictatorship. (Of course, a Republican win or near
tie in both houses will have pretty much the same result.)
I hope that the disintegration turns out better than the see-no-evil drift, and the successor countries
that emerge out of the US will have better constitutions.

(58,785 posts)these past almost 2 years how strong our institutions have proven to be, how well they've stood up? My big fear is that a majority formed of feckless nonvoters and right-wing rabble would NOT vote to stop them.
IF we win strong, though, that will mean the American people are saying NO to what Trump is trying to do and turning the house at least over to the Democrats to acts as a check on him. And there's all the difference in the world in that.
Btw, there's been an unusual surge in hysterical posts on DU. You may not have been here long enough to realize that. Please think about whether contributing to irrational fear and silliness is something responsible people on the right or left should be doing.

(33,414 posts)Checked in this afternoon and it seemed like the majority of new threads are chicken little come to life. So, I just started looking for names that I associate with good sense and good reports. It helped.
Hysteria doesn't win elections. Motivated people do. It looks like there are more people motivated to do their part to end this madness than I've ever seen before. It makes me determined to do my part -- don't want to be the straw that didn't get on the monster's back.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)big time. This phony hysterical wave is hardly coming from "just us chickens" and is obviously a social media attack.

Although I do worry about what people at the top levels are doing, I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep imagining Fox's audience doing anything that would risk their homes and comfort.
Those who attend his rallies are welcome as far as I'm concerned to try to riot in the arenas and parking lots while they're worked up and emboldened by being among a whole 4000 pulled from millions who live 120 miles around. Almost wish they would, but police are out in numbers for these things. In any case, for sure they won't be turning their fantasy riots into reality in their own neighborhoods.
Btw, these days the power and water would be turned off, according to civil emergency plans every municipality is required to have, and primary boulevards and highways closed. This for a population allergic to walking 3 blocks for groceries and who mostly have no idea where the nearest drinking water could be found.

(754 posts)We've been saved so far by Mr Trump's unprecedented and near-complete incompetence so far, not our institutions.
> IF we win strong, though, that will mean the American people are saying NO ... acts as a check
Huh? Check what? Check how? Congress is not the executive branch. Mr Trump can do pretty much
whatever he wants, when he wants. Congress cant send in the marines and tell him no.
