Multi-purpose Native American Methodist pumpkins

This was news to me but apparently has been going on for 25 years or so.
So after the Breast Cancer walk we were headed home and saw pumpkins for sale at a Methodist Church. We stop in. Really nice pumpkins.
As my wife and daughter were picking out what they wanted I was talking to the lady watching over things.

Yes, they really know how to grow them.
Where are these from?
A Navajo reservation in New Mexico. It creates jobs.

They are trucked here in air conditioned trucks. What we don't sell go to the Holton Elementary school (named after former Gov. And Time Kaine's father-in-law) for their Fall Festival. They keep some that they don't sell to compost for their gardens. The rest go to Shalom Farms who also use them as compost. They grow vegetables to donate to food banks.
