(297,303 posts)States of America giving our Civil Rights Icon, John Lewis. the Medal of Freedom.
What a day in history!
The Honorable John R. Lewis. From his activism in the civil rights movement to his nearly 25 years in the House of Representatives, John R. Lewis has dedicated his life to shattering barriers and fighting injustice. The son of sharecroppers from Alabama, he rose with courage, fortitude and purpose to organize the first student sit-ins and the earliest freedom rides. The youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington, a fearless advocate and a distinguished member of Congress, John Lewis has earned our lasting gratitude for a lifetime dedicated to the pursuit of equality and justice for all.

Fifty years after Bloody Sunday, I marched to the top of the Edmund Pettus Bridge with Mrs. Amelia Boynton Robinson, Congressman John Lewis, President Barack Obama, and many others.

(10,831 posts)That's all I have to say, all that needs to be said beyond the words of John Lewis:
Vote like you never voted before.
Words to live and die by, eh?

(5,275 posts)This really might be the most important election in awhile, if somehow the right holds the House it may be game, set, match for democracy.
This is so similar to where Germany was 85 years ago. We know how that turned out and in the end not so well for Hitler and Mussolini. That said it was Hell for lots of groups of people, particularly Jewish people, for over a decade.
We are where we have not been in a long time, those of us old enough recall people like George Wallace and Lester Maddox but they did not get anywhere near the traction possible today with Cable TV, Sinclair, the Web, and right wing wacko radio.
