Connecticut Republicans Struggle To Compete In U.S. House And Senate Races

In eastern Connecticut, Republicans have a candidate in name only for Congress, one who gave up on the race weeks ago saying his party abandoned him.

In the New Haven area, Rosa DeLauro’s GOP challenger, Angel Cadena Jr., uses it as a punchline that the party won’t give him money because it is saving it for races it has a shot at winning. In Hartford, 1st District Republican candidate Jennifer Nye decided to run on the spur of the moment at the GOP convention because no one else was interested. She’s raised no money, according to campaign finance reports.

And despite an unexpected open-seat race in the 5th District and the taint of the Elizabeth Esty scandal for Democrats, Republican Manny Santos has been unable to convince national Republicans to expend political capital on the race.

It’s been that kind of year for Republicans in Connecticut, who have been unable to match the intensity of hotly-contested state races for governor and for control of the legislature at the federal level.
