(43,182 posts)I remember 9-11 with there being stories of the State Department being bombed and 7 different planes being hijacked. And Sandy Hook you heard about the shooter's mother being a teacher at the school.
With 24-7 news, it's a race to break. CNN was too quick to report a story that turned out to be a baseless rumor.
It's reckless but not unexpected. I wouldn't say they "lied" or are promoting some sort of agenda. It's just sloppy journalism.

(17,306 posts)to accuse CNN of lying is overreach in this situation.
In this day and age of social media and word spreading like lightning, virtually all news agencies publicize reports of this or that. The responsible ones later clarify or confirm as additional information becomes available. Nobody sits back and waits for hours for all the facts to come in. Those days are gone.

(52,253 posts)i don't think cnn lied or made up the story, but it's entirely possible the *someone else* lied or made up the story, knowing it would be retracted, but seeing value in having that kind of confusion out there.
responsible media outlets used to try to avoid being a vehicle for politically motivated planted stories.
it can't be stopped entirely, but nowadays they don't even seem to be trying.
in fact, they seem to welcome sensational stories and don't view the inevitable retraction as a particular downside.

And we wonder why we are in this situation.
Until everyone stops watching cable news, and rewarding this neverending cycle, and then contributing to it themselves then we are never going to get past this.

(67,782 posts)I seriously doubt it was intentional, and it was retracted very quickly.
A mistake isn't a "lie".
No shame on them.
