(129,389 posts)Actually I think it's supposed to refer to a type of coal with lower percentages of certain compounds (like sulfur and phosphorous, etc.) that are naturally mixed in with the carbon.

It's still in the theoretical phase, like fusion.

Say you manage to get all the SO2 and NO3 out of the stack, then you have it in some semi-solidified form on the ground. Say you collect all the heavy metals Strontium, Radium, Mercury, perhaps in the flyash, what do you do with this toxic and somewhat radioactive stuff. You can use a little bit in asphalt, but not enough to dispose of it.
FGD (flue gas desulfurization) sludge is some interesting stuff. It smells like hell and left alone will eat its way through a steel bucket.
(been there done that)

(593 posts)In reality coal causes huge amounts of C02, toxins, and carcinogens to be released. There are cancer clusters around coal power plants all over the US, not to mention the environmental disaster of mining coal. Because coal is so inherently dirty and has a very low energy density in terms of kWh/ton of fuel there isn't much that can be done to clean it up.

(14,337 posts)early 50s? I was very, very young, but remember it well. I couldn't walk around the apartment barefoot. My feet were black. I remember always washing my feet. Even walking around NYC back then, my feet in sandals, and bottoms of my shoes, were always filthy. My Mom was CONSTANTLY mopping floors, telling us to take off our shoes before we came inside.
Clean coal? I don't remember that.

He said it in front of some coal miners in Ohio. I thought I noticed some smiling miners.

(14,337 posts)While I don't claim to be an expert, I am old enough to remember miners dying from "black lung" disease. Clean coal? Just given my childhood experiences with a coal stove, I would have to say no such thing.
