. . . . . Europe from the 1920s to the mid 1940s.
In particular, study the rise of Adolf Hitler. It is time to recognize that we are watching that sort of thing repeat itself right here in the United States and led by the face of Donald Trump.
It is my own belief that there is an organization behind him. He is simply the salesman, the front man. It is perfectly reasonable to think the power behind him is Putin and the oligarch class.
Think of the front in the pot of water parable.

(129,096 posts)nor are they speculating like what is happening here on DU.
History definitely is a good teacher but one thing to keep in mind is this - Although the U.S. was made up of descendents of the very Europeans that fled that era, those countries were generally homogeneous and nowhere near as ethnically diverse nor geographically large as this nation. And Hitler was leading an essentially landlocked nation seeking lebensraum and riling up a "base" to fight for it through demonization of minority ethnicities and religions while barreling through country after country. They and others through history, went to war generally to obtain access to resources, much of which this country is blessed to already have.

(1,483 posts)1. Do not obey in advance. Much of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then start to do it without being asked. You've already done this, haven't you? Stop. Anticipatory obedience teaches authorities what is possible and accelerates unfreedom.
Now is the time to wear the Hillary 2016 tee shirt hidden in the drawer? Or to ask everyone..the grocery checker, the babysitter, your parents, "Have you voted?" Now is the time to put the BLM lawn sign out?
(Pre and post 2016 I admit I was afraid of RWNJ random acts of violence, it may have made me cautious. It's not the repressive government I fear at this moment - but its fanbase. )
