cancel the Midterms? Are we to expect more of the same threats in the next two weeks?

(6,496 posts)the shipment of packages for whoever it is that did this. Nothing about this makes me think the person or persons involved are experts at anything... at least from what I have seen so far.

(8,758 posts)This is a MAGA crank, and an inept one as well. There has been no manifesto discovered, yet. And no calls from anybody on either side to cancel the election.
In fact, most of MAGA-land are saying that the Democrats are bombing themselves (or faking it) for attention.

(25,253 posts)You said no manifesto discovered yet. The keyword in my opinion is yet. We are still really at the beginning of the events that unfolded today. We still have two weeks before the midterms. Who knows what will unfold in the next two weeks that can escalate this situation.
All I know is that Trump and the Repugs are desperate to hang on to power. I wouldn't put anything beneath them to do to keep power.
I see that somebody posted in this thread that there is no way the Midterms can be stopped. How many things have we said would never happen here in this country - have happened since Trump took office.
I'm hoping that the Midterms come off as we all expect and that the Blue Wave lets the Dems take back the House and Senate. But in the last two years I come to expect the unexpected. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Midterms come off as we expect.

(34,075 posts)There is no legal mechanism for a universal cancelation of midterms (which are all under state control).

(11,949 posts)The Federal Government has nothing to do with elections.
Trump could order it till the cows come home with no impact except insuring a Democratic landslide.

(62,444 posts)Hi Global1, I'm curious about something, and really would appreciate it if you could answer this question for me.
In my state, Delaware, and in lots of other states, like California, New York, etc., we have a completely D controlled administration and legislature.
Also, in my state, like EVERY OTHER STATE IN THE COUNTRY, elections aren't run by the federal government. They are run by the state government.
So, since this is something of a "frequent flyer" of a stupid notion that often gets posted to DU, could you please explain to me what is the mechanism by which, even if he really wanted to, Donald Trump is supposed to get all of the individual state election departments on board with this stupid idea?
Like, explain what is the process - from Trump saying "stop the elections" to, say, the Delaware Dept. of Elections deciding to give two shits about him saying that.
Thank you in advance.

(25,253 posts)"Trump could conceivably try to use emergency presidential powers to postpone or cancel an election, but that power has to be granted by Congress and recognized by a court. To do so without such approval would be an illegal power grab unlike any other in American history, and one that Congress and the states are beyond unlikely to accept."
As you know - Congress is currently in the hands of the Repugs. The same ones that are worried that they will lose power in the Midterms with a 'blue wave'.
Also - they are the ones that have stacked the courts and seemingly have SCOTUS in their corner.
So like I said in a previous posts - in the last two years we heard of so many things that supposedly couldn't happen - yet Trump got away with them.
So - there really is a slim chance that something could happen to postpone the Midterms. Probably won't happen - but if anyone could attempt to pull it off - Trump would be the one to attempt it.
Let's all hope that won't be played out and we have a 'blue tsunami' and take back both the House and Senate.
