Dow tumbles more than 600 points and sheds year-to-date gains amid late-session drop
The Dow Jones Industrial Average late-Wednesday was trading at its lowest level of the session, putting the blue-chip gauge on track to book its third triple-digit loss in succession as fears about a lackluster outlook for corporate earnings and economic growth undercut investor confidence. The Dow DJIA, -2.12% was most recently down 512 points, or 2.1%, at 24,671, with losses in Caterpillar Inc. CAT, -5.51% United Technologies Corp. UTX, -5.74% and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS, -4.11% delivering the most potent blow to the price-weighted index with less than a half-hour left in the regular trading day. The Dow's losses saw it erase its year-to-date gain and came even as a rally in Boeing Co. BA, +1.92% produced a brief lift for the benchmark at the start of Wednesday trade, but that advance evaporated fast. -
