The Georgia NAACP is filing a complaint claiming that votes for Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams in that state's race for governor have been changed to Republican candidate Brian Kemp.
The NAACP's state conference electronically filed complaints with the Georgia Secretary of State's office (which is held by Kemp himself) claiming that votes cast for Abrams in Bartow and Dodge counties were initially registered to Kemp, according to USA Today. As of Tuesday, the Georgia NAACP also had plans to file additional complaints in Henry and Cobb counties, likewise claiming that votes intended for Abrams had initially been changed to Kemp. Eight voters in total are alleging that they noticed their votes had been changed.
"Weve experienced this before. They ended up taking these old dilapidated machines out of service. The ones giving the problems. They should have been replaced about 10 years ago," Phyllis Blake, president of the Georgia NAACP, told USA Today. The paper included this troubling story from a Georgia voter named Pamela Grimes:
Grimes said she went to a polling site in Bartow County Thursday and tried to select Abrams, but the machine marked the box for Kemp. Grimes said she tried several times to clear the selection before it allowed her to vote for Abrams.

(6,831 posts)we vote by mail. I wish every state did this.
To others, I say this: investigate what it takes to change HOW your state votes. Start action committees. If necessary, file petitions. Get those signatures. Take it to the Legislature. But, get those changes made.
We have GOT to have a unified system of voting in this country that is tamper-proof. One of these days, that is going to be VITAL to saving our democracy.

(94,597 posts)This is much more likely the result of sloppily calibrated machines buy patronage election workers. If you're brilliant enough to program machines to flip votes, you're brilliant enough not to tip off the voter.

(7,643 posts)cast. Voting cannot be "observed" when computers are part of the voting process- whether the computer is recording votes or tabulating them. The software is proprietary and the machines are never checked for defects, malicious code, etc.
BTW what is a "patronage election worker" ?

(5,376 posts)Why is it that there never seems to be bad touch screen calibrations that seem to favor Democrats? Why do you assume something was sloppily done as opposed to being intentionally miscalibrated?

(82,849 posts)It's just an amazing coincidence that the only reports of vote-changing just happen to be Democrat-to-Republican.

(9,656 posts)An expert panel at the National Academy of Sciences has called for sweeping election reforms, including one, specific recommendation that should come as no surprise: use paper.
From Thursdays announcement about the reports release:
All local, state, and federal elections should be conducted using human-readable paper ballots by the 2020 presidential election.
And what about the mid-terms, right around the corner in November? Yes, lets try to get paper ballots for that one, too, the panel said. Lets try our best to stay away from all the technologies that weve got in place now, because theyre full of holes:
Ballots that have been marked by voters should not be returned over the internet or any network connected to it, because no current technology can guarantee their secrecy, security, and verifiability.

Given that the indictment mentions five times the number of affected voters than wed heard about in the Illinois breach, its looking like the 2016 tampering went deeper than wed understood, Norden said. As Wireds Kim Zetter has pointed out, the indictments suggest that the 2016 attacks may have been an afterthought, given that the vendor and state board of election attacks came mid-election, in June through October 2016, months after the attacks on the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clintons campaign.
Norden:
We would be wise to assume future attacks will involve more advanced planning. Combine this with the fact that the Russians undoubtedly learned information from their 2016 efforts, and there is reason to believe future attacks on our election infrastructure could be far more damaging.
As of March 2018, 13 states were still using at least some direct-recording electronic voting machines, that lack a paper trail, as their primary polling place equipment, making audits in these states impossible. Norden reports.

the point is NO ONE KNOWS if the count the machine spits out is accurate or not
with out proof or a confession the center can not attribute the inaccuracy to cheating when it could just be the machines are poor products but
what we do know is these inaccurate machines have been deliberately left in place for over a decade since the problem has been discovered

(37,648 posts)That's how they track how people have voted. The name of the voter is recorded somewhere.
I hope there's a way to confirm the votes. Such a waste of time and effort and money...just trying to have a fair election. Farrightwingnut America.
