I am attending Matthew Shepard's memorial on Friday. My parents don't want me to.

There will be heightened security, so I don't believe that anything will happen, but this is a personal journey.

Matthew Shepard was a cousin of my spouses' childhood friend and college roommate.

This friend came out at the same time as Matthew to their very large, loving family. My spouse was the phone with this friend for hours after they saw "Boys Don't Cry" because it triggered all the pain and horror that was visited on that family in 1998.

We will be attending with family at the National Cathedral, and no one will scare us away.

These mutherfuckers sending bombs will not take this away from us. No amount of attempted erasure of queer people by this administration and the pitiful minority that supports them will stop love.

We will bear witness.

My husband and I attended the Matthew Shepard Foundation 20th anniversary gala last weekend in Denver. We were privileged to meet Matthew's parents Dennis and Judy. Very inspiring.

and worse will always serve as a reminder to the rest of us the horror that can be done to another human being by others.

Matthew will be remembered for a very long time. RIP, Matthew

May the universe bless and keep you and all those in attendance from harm. As a mom myself, I would worry if my child chose to make this trek but I’d be so very proud at the same time. ☮️

Decency is becoming a lost art. You and people like you carry on the tradition of compassion, dignity, and decency! Blessings on you and yours.

From all of us at DU could you leave a flower, maybe a white rose, at the Cathedral? I believe we'd want to bear witness, too.
