The Magabomber is almost certainly an example of Dunning Kruger at play.

I think the most likely scenario we have here is the Dunning Kruger effect.

I think we’re looking at someone who:

1. Might have enough limited technical knowledge to attempt to build an explosive, or perhaps went online to attempt to get insight as how to build an explosive, but was too limited in the ability to build an explosive that was actually functional;

2. A rather poor speller; and

3. Someone who was so blinded or consumed by ideology that he didn’t take time to think about the potential counterproductive effect his actions might ultimately have.

It’s as simple as that.

1. And who also didn't seem to know that most bigwigs get their mail screened.

The Clintons and the Obamas and members of Congress don't just put on their bathrobes and stroll out to their mailboxes to check their mail every morning like regular people; their mail goes to screening facilities - for obvious reasons.

I'm sure he used her name as the return address because he thinks she's still the chair.

If the bomber wanted to divert from possible Florida postmarks on any of the envelopes, he might have wanted a Florida politician to be the fake return address. Obviously a bomber will want the return address to be someone the recipient might know (although I have to think any of these people might have been pretty puzzled about why DWS was sending then a lumpy package wrapped in a lot of tape).

About par for the idiots that will believe anything the tRump tweets.

5. Yes, pure theater, OR someone who has dementia that's far enough along that he just

can't get things right, even if he reads it right off the internet. The clock, to me, indicates that -- he's impaired enough that he's unable to understand why a clock is not what you need for a mail bomb.

I bet that when they catch this guy, he's a white male in his 60's (if the dementia theory is correct).

Good point. If not dementia then maybe someone with some sort of mental illness like schizophrenia. Hmmm. See enough right-wingers who are obviously crazy and who believe all the weird conspiracies. Makes sense that maybe they would just piece some stuff together in a nonsensical manner too.

I hope they catch this guy so we can figured out if it was politically motivated theater or just some anti-social loser getting his jollies.

13. Maybe not. Bomb expert on TV said he thought the timer could be a safe-arm device
Wed Oct 24, 2018, 11:17 PM

intended to prevent the bomb from going off for a period of time while the bomber was still handling it.

I'm sure we'll know before long who and what all this really is.

A big ass resistor and capacitor are, like, ten cents worth of parts and probably more reliable.

This might not be a guy who knows about capacitors and resistors - the timer arrangement was probably simpler for him to figure out and put together. I wonder if there are more of those bombs out there?

6. I would say for lack of a better term, it might just be a "troll"

Just a sick person who is cracking up over all the commotion they caused. Sitting in his dark apartment "teeehee I got those dumb libs and #fakenews media!!!" It will be interesting to see what this person is all about when they catch him. Maybe not even doing it for political reasons, but just exploiting the situation. It just seems like a lot of this seems like an over the top parody. To me that reeks of an internet troll who took things to the next level. I could very likely be wrong, though.

Either to troll or to legitimately attempt to cause harm.
