(11,949 posts)I dont think I have much of one and my southern friends generally agree. My northern friends say it is subtle but there. I obviously emulated my educated southern father. He was a communication major and in the 50s it was seen as a detriment to a career. My mother still has a strong Arkansas/Louisiana accent. Not hickish/hillbilly like Sessions but she smooths out words and drops unnecessary parts of words.
That said, give me 5 beers or 5 hours with my Arkansas family and it comes right out. I readily admit turning it on when it is to my advantage.
What gets me is Yes mam and sir. I have to work hard not to say it in a professional environment where it would seem strange. But in daily life I use it all the time. When the check out person at Publix ask a question, if they appear over 40 I always say mam/sir when answering.
