You're safe now.

Matthew Shepard's ashes were laid to rest in the Washington National Cathedral today. Two days later, we’ll mark the nine-year anniversary of President Obama signing a law that bears Matthew’s name. - Hillary Clinton tweet

'You're safe now': Matthew Shepard laid to rest 20 years after his death
The gay Wyoming student's 1998 murder sparked a new chapter in the country’s LGBTQ rights movement.

President Barack Obama signed in 2009 the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law. The act, for which the Shepards lobbied, was the first to grant protections in federal legislation to the LGBTQ community. However, the law did not change laws on a state level — Indiana, South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas and Matthew Shepard’s home state of Wyoming still do not have any legislation protecting against hate crimes.

The Shepards still struggle to reconcile their son’s highly publicized death with their private grief over losing their child. They lovingly remember him as an ordinary person and recall his love for drama, his quirks and his commitment to inclusivity of all people. The Shepards aim to live their lives in a way they feel would have made Matthew proud.

“We had two sons, one straight and one gay, and we're proud of both of them,” Dennis Shepard said. “Start talking about it. Be proud of your children.”

I was in college when Matthew was murdered. As a result of his death, a friend of mine came out openly as gay, something I already had known privately. He and I were on a leadership committee for a religious group on campus and when he was ostracized for "coming out", I stood by him...needless to say, we were no longer welcome within that faith organization. That was the beginning of my political life!

I hope that Matthew receives peace now. He was a martyr that continues to inspire so many people.
